Over two days, our team took our residents out on the town to Kilmarnock Antique Gallery and Lee's Restaurant for lunch. Everyone had a great time! Thanks to our team for making sure all of our residents who wanted to participate had assistance, and thanks to our local businesses for supporting our outing.

Congratulations to our Team Member of the Quarter (Q2) Aniya Smith, who is a CNA. We had a great time celebrating her and our team members with milestone service anniversaries with a nacho and taco bar today.

Congratulations to our apprentice program graduates! We were honored to host our first class and welcome you to our team.

The seven students graduated from Care Assistants to Nurse Aides from our earn-as-you-learn apprenticeship program.

The Lancashire graduates are: Angel Burnham, Christa Canter, Chanelle Conaway (Heart Award), Elizabeth Hinson (valedictorian), Richele Hurley (salutatorian), Amani Roy and CinSere Turner (Persistence Award).

Six of our graduates will stay with us — where they started as care assistants or in housekeeping — with the valedictorian joining the team at Walter Reed.

“I want to thank you,” instructor Nora Gillespie told the class. “Nothing about this is easy. You pulled together as a team and you have all the tools, heart and compassion.”

We are so proud to have such dedicated nurse aides joining our team! The program also covers the cost of the state certification exam to be a CNA. The Peninsula apprenticeship class also graduated Friday, and you can read the whole story at https://vahs.com/vhs-adds-17-nurse-aides-to-roster-following-apprenticeship-graduations/

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, observed on June 19. It signifies when word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, in 1865 - more than two years after President Lincoln signed it into law.

We close this CNA Week with a chat with one of our champions, Aniya Smith, who has been with us for about 1.5 years.

She says she was naturally drawn to healthcare and was certified as a nurse aide in high school.

“My mom did it, and my grandmother had breast cancer and I helped with taking care of her,” Aniya said.

She was a travel CNA and then did home care. Aniya said “stability called” and working for a community like ours means not having to bounce around.

“I like helping the residents. We help them dress — sometimes special like when they participate in spirit weeks — and with whatever they need,” she said. “They look at us like family. Our residents with dementia, especially, love us so much.”

CNAs are the eyes and ears for the nursing staff. They are with the residents the most in helping them with all activities of daily life.

“We’re the underdogs, but we’re there first. There’s more of us, we’re around more. We kind of become their family and help them, cheering them on, especially through physical therapy,” Aniya said.

She bounces around the building — “I’m everywhere,” she said. “I really enjoy Memory Care. We go along with their reality.”

She also is working with the current apprenticeship class students, who will graduate to nurse aides on Friday.

“They’re really good to be starting out,” Aniya said. “Doing that is giving me the outlook of being a beginner. They’re doing a good job, questioning if they’re doing everything right.”

She may not have been at Lancashire long, but Aniya said it feels like she’s known everyone for years; it’s become a second home.

“She has excelled beyond expectations,” says Director of Nursing LaTasha Muse. “She picks up shifts without hesitation. She is kind to her residents and the family members love her. She is truly one of a kind.”

We appreciate all our CNAs do daily! They truly support individuals to live their best life and we couldn’t do this without them.

To our CNAs: Thank you! Our nurse aides are the eyes and ears for the nursing team and forge important bonds with our residents. They are our champions!

Our team of CNAs are the backbone of our clinical team. They are with the residents daily and report to the nursing team what they hear and see.

Our dietary team provided an amazing spread of options to enjoy. We loved connecting with so many professionals from across our community. Thank you everyone who came out to network, share ideas and support local business. We are already looking forward to the next one! Until then, we encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses and keep making those connections.
