Day 2 Morning Session: Young Dro – Resilience & Reinvention
Atlanta rapper, songwriter, and philanthropist Young Dro, born D’Juan Montrel Hart, shared a powerful and deeply personal testimony during the Day 2 Morning Session on resilience, recovery, and reinvention.
Once spiraling through substance abuse and personal struggles, Young Dro spoke openly about his journey to sobriety and healing. Now five years sober, he reflected on how recovery transformed not only his personal life, but also his music, purpose, and commitment to helping others. His transparency about addiction, trauma, mental health, and accountability resonated strongly with attendees, especially when discussing the realities many youth face in underserved communities.
Young Dro emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction recovery, particularly within the communities that helped shape him. He spoke candidly about the pressures of street life, the impact of environment, and the need for mentorship, support systems, and honest conversations.
Following the session, we had the pleasure of speaking with him personally about the challenges impacting youth in Durham, North Carolina including violence, substance abuse, trauma, and the growing mental health crisis affecting young people. We shared our vision for future community outreach efforts and invited him to participate in an upcoming event focused on youth empowerment, healing, and prevention.
Young Dro was receptive to the conversation, expressed genuine interest in the work being done in Durham, and encouraged us to follow up with his management team regarding future collaboration opportunities. His willingness to listen, engage, and potentially share his story to support youth was both encouraging and inspiring.
The Q&A session that followed was one of the most impactful moments of the conference. Attendees connected deeply with his honesty, vulnerability, humor, and authenticity. His story served as a reminder that recovery is possible, healing is real, and reinvention can happen regardless of one’s past.
