Day 2 Morning Session: Young Dro – Resilience & Reinvention

Atlanta rapper, songwriter, and philanthropist Young Dro, born D’Juan Montrel Hart, shared a powerful and deeply personal testimony during the Day 2 Morning Session on resilience, recovery, and reinvention.

Once spiraling through substance abuse and personal struggles, Young Dro spoke openly about his journey to sobriety and healing. Now five years sober, he reflected on how recovery transformed not only his personal life, but also his music, purpose, and commitment to helping others. His transparency about addiction, trauma, mental health, and accountability resonated strongly with attendees, especially when discussing the realities many youth face in underserved communities.

Young Dro emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction recovery, particularly within the communities that helped shape him. He spoke candidly about the pressures of street life, the impact of environment, and the need for mentorship, support systems, and honest conversations.

Following the session, we had the pleasure of speaking with him personally about the challenges impacting youth in Durham, North Carolina including violence, substance abuse, trauma, and the growing mental health crisis affecting young people. We shared our vision for future community outreach efforts and invited him to participate in an upcoming event focused on youth empowerment, healing, and prevention.

Young Dro was receptive to the conversation, expressed genuine interest in the work being done in Durham, and encouraged us to follow up with his management team regarding future collaboration opportunities. His willingness to listen, engage, and potentially share his story to support youth was both encouraging and inspiring.

The Q&A session that followed was one of the most impactful moments of the conference. Attendees connected deeply with his honesty, vulnerability, humor, and authenticity. His story served as a reminder that recovery is possible, healing is real, and reinvention can happen regardless of one’s past.

Our 9am Welcome & Opening Plenary
We Are Enough: Blake Mycoskie in Conversation with Dan Gillison

In this deeply personal conversation, Blake Mycoskie, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of TOMS, joins NAMI CEO Dan Gillison to explore purpose, mental health, and what it truly means to succeed. Blake shares the untold parts of his journey, from building one of the world’s most recognized social impact brands to confronting the personal cost of ambition, identity, and pressure. After a period of stepping back and reflecting, he returns with a renewed commitment to emotional wellbeing, both his own and others.

Together, they discussed how these experiences led to the creation of “We Are Enough”, a movement rooted in the belief that we are already enough, and a call to shift from constant striving toward self acceptance, connection, and healing.

As Day 3 of the NAMI Conference comes to a close, I leave feeling inspired, energized, and equipped with so much knowledge to bring back to my community.

Over the past few days, I have had the opportunity to connect with incredible advocates, leaders, and volunteers from NAMI affiliates across the country from Alaska and Alabama to Chicago, Kentucky, and many more. The networking has exceeded anything I could have imagined. Hearing the stories, successes, and challenges from others who are passionate about mental health advocacy has been truly inspiring.

The workshops, conversations, and shared experiences have provided valuable tools and insights that will help me better serve individuals and families impacted by mental health challenges in our community. I am returning home with renewed purpose, fresh ideas, and a deeper commitment to the work we do every day.

I am already looking forward to next year’s conference!

A special shout out to Nika Allen. You are truly “boots on the ground,” President, leading with passion, dedication, and heart. It is an honor to serve alongside you as Vice President of NAMI Durham. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Together, we will continue to educate, advocate, support, and bring hope to those who need it most.

Reality of Today 😩

🗣️ Gas pushing $5 a gallon
Rent sitting at $1,800, $2,200, $2,500 like that’s normal.
Childcare costing as much as somebody’s entire paycheck.

Then they tell people they need to make 3x the rent to qualify… meanwhile a lot of people making the rules don’t even make 3x the rent themselves.

Everybody’s under pressure.

Men and women arguing with each other.
Parents exhausted.
Groceries so high you don’t even feel like figuring out dinner anymore.
Schools don’t feel the same.
Kids are acting out.
Adults are burned out.

Mentally, emotionally, financially… people are carrying a lot right now.

So when somebody seems a little quiet, irritated, distant, or not like themselves…

Give them some grace.

A lot of people aren’t being rude.
They’re tired.

Life has been applying pressure on all of us.

People living with mental health conditions deserve the same support, compassion, and respect as anyone facing a physical health condition. Mental health is health, and no one should feel ashamed for needing help, healing, or understanding. Support can save lives, restore hope, and remind people they are not alone.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, break the stigma, and remind people that healing is possible. Mental health affects us all, and no one should have to suffer in silence. This month, let’s choose compassion over judgment, honesty over shame, and support over silence. Check on your loved ones, speak kindly to yourself, and remember: asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You are not alone, your story matters, and your healing matters too. 💜

Healing begins the moment we stop suffering in silence and start being honest about what we’re carrying. Shame loses its power when we speak up, share our stories, and allow others to walk beside us. Every conversation about mental health helps break the stigma and reminds someone else that they are not alone. Even when your mind tells you otherwise, there are people who care, people who understand, and hope that still remains. 💜

This hit hard waking up to this news. Thank you Pastor Nina for every word of encouragement, every kind gesture, and every moment you made me feel seen, valued, and loved. You spoke to me and treated me as if you had known me forever, and that is a gift I will never forget. Your presence carried warmth, wisdom, grace, and strength.

Fly high my Queen you have truly earned your wings. Your life touched so many, and your legacy of love, faith, and encouragement will continue to live on in the hearts of those you blessed. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Rest peacefully, Pastor Nina Davis. 💜

Your mental health matters to God just as much as every other part of your life. He sees your pain, understands your struggles, and cares deeply about your healing. Seeking support does not mean your faith is weak—it means you are taking steps toward wholeness. Prayer is powerful, and so is reaching out for help. You are not alone, and healing is possible. 💜
