Are you nuts about nuts? I eat nuts every day! In fact, I eat Brazil nuts every day, but not by the handful. That’s because Brazil nuts are super high in selenium, a mineral and needed in tiny amounts to help the body perform many functions. For instance, it you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, eating 1-2 Brazil nuts daily is a good idea and may even help reduce thyroid auto-antibodies. Consistent selenium intake is also important for fertility, brain health, and can help reduce inflammation. But more is not better with Brazil nuts. Selenium toxicity can cause hair loss, fatigue, nausea, and nerve damage. So go ahead and eat Brazil nuts, but 1-2 per day is all you need.
