Eating is more than just nourishment! It’s also a sensory experience. For many autistic individuals, differences in sensory processing can impact how they explore, accept, and enjoy food.
Textures, smells, temperatures, and appearances can feel overwhelming or unfamiliar. What may look like “picky eating” is often a child communicating their comfort level and sensory needs.
Feeding challenges may include:
🥄 Preference for specific textures
🍎 Limited food variety
👃 Sensitivity to smells
🌡️ Strong reactions to temperature
🎨 Avoidance based on color or appearance
🖐️ Hesitation when touching new foods
With patience, understanding, and the right support, children can build positive relationships with food at their own pace.
As a speech-language pathologist trained in feeding therapy, my goal is to create safe, supportive experiences that encourage exploration, reduce pressure, and celebrate every step forward.
✨ Honor sensory needs
✨ Encourage food exploration
✨ Celebrate small wins
Because progress at the table blooms over time. 🌸
