Can you truly relax - let go of everything pulling at your attention - and simply be present?

It can be surprisingly challenging to lie quietly for 90 minutes. To be still with just your body and mind. To not reach for your phone or skip ahead to the next song.

In our active yoga practice, we focus the mind through breath and movement. But in restorative yoga, we lose that crutch - there’s no motion or “next pose” to rely on.
The stillness itself becomes the practice.

Over time, the benefits can be profound: a calmer mind, reduced daily stress, an easier shift into “rest and digest,” and even improved memory and attention span.

Yin Yoga is the quiet complement to more active practices and sports. Slow, steady, and grounding, it balances the body and calms the mind.

We offer two Yin classes every week. Here are 3 reasons why everyone should practice yin:

1. Deep Release
Long-held postures go beyond the muscles to gently stretch the connective tissues - fascia, ligaments, and joints. This helps improve flexibility, mobility, and ease in the hips, spine, and hamstrings.

2. Stillness & Awareness
The longer holds invite curiosity and listening. As we slow down, we notice how our bodies move, release, and find comfort in stillness.

3. Restful & Calm Sleep
Yin activates the parasympathetic nervous system, easing tension and quieting the mind. Students often leave class peaceful and sleep deeply afterward.

Yin teaches patience, presence, and balance. A practice of softening, releasing, and tuning into the body’s quiet wisdom.

New time for Denise’s Pranayama & Meditation class: every Tuesday 4:30-5:15pm. The perfect reset before dinner and your evening!

Available online or in studio, Denise invites us to come to this class to get to know ourselves. Explore how you can influence your mind and body through the simple act of breathing and finding stillness.

A pranayama practice will bring balance, calm, and a sense of peacefulness that will connect your body, mind and spirit.

In this 45-minute class, we begin with pranayama and our breath before a natural transition into meditation. The breath helps relax and balance the body and mind, making it easier to turn inward and rest in focused stillness.

Denise’s class is appropriate for anyone and can easily be practiced in the warmth of the studio or from the comfort of your home online.

At Yoga East, our lineage in the Ashtanga method, was born in Mysore, India, at a place originally called the Ashtanga Yoga *Research* Institute. Over the years, some Mysore spaces have drifted away from that idea of personal exploration - but for us, it’s at the heart of the practice.

In our shala, research means empowerment and collaboration. As teachers, we see your physical framework and all of its potential, but we can’t feel what is happening on the inside. We rely on your feedback in order to offer guidance, ideas and tools to help make the practice work for you. Research can look like trying variations of a posture, using a wall, blocks or a strap, or even skipping certain asana all together - we want you to meet yourself where you are.

Yoga is a lifelong practice so it needs to evolve and change to meet the needs of each one of us, through all the periods of our lives. Step into our Mysore room on any morning and you’ll see it: some students practicing Yoga Sangraha, yoga therapy, or restorative postures - right alongside others moving through a traditional Ashtanga series.

At Yoga East, research is alive and well. 🧡

We encourage students. (period.)

At Yoga East, it is our highest goal to welcome and help everyone interested in the benefits that a yoga practice brings to the body, mind and spirit. We meet each student where they are, understand their goals, and encourage them.

We take a collaborative approach with the knowledge that life gets messy and progress is never linear.

We encourage each person who comes through our doors to own their practice, to share with us what is working, and to ask questions when they have them.

We encourage each person to challenge themselves but also expect them to say no or take rest when they need it.

We encourage students. 🧡
