Boundary violations show up in many ways, big and small. We can have rigid or porous psychological boundaries in either our protective or containing boundaries. Protective boundaries keep us safe from the world and define who we are. Containing boundaries protect the world from us.

How is your containing boundary and protective boundary? Do you wall off and shut down under stress or does that stress leak out in attempts to control the environment and others? What are some of your boundary violating behaviors?

I find boundaries to be one of the most complex and challenging aspects of relational recovery. I didn't see boundaries done well in my family of origin. Did you?

As infants and children what do we need in our relationships to thrive and grow?

Safety: "I've got you and I'm here to protect you"

Support: "I see you and you are okay." Nurturing, acceptance, freedom to express needs and emotions, realistic limits, etc.

Regulation-"I'll soothe you and help you soothe yourself“

When these needs go unmet as children, for whatever reason, trauma, stress, divorce, addiction, death, we can interpret it as “it’s my fault” and because we have these vitally important relational needs, we begin to develop strategies to cope with them not being met. Later in life these same strategies can become the barriers to the intimacy and connection we seek.

Virtual Workshop Change Begins with Me: Healing Relationship Patterns February 25th 9-12 EST

When having a difficult conversation, you know it works best to use “I statements” instead of blaming or insulting your partner. You’ve heard of the benefits of stepping back and taking a few deep breaths when you need to calm down. You know it’s important to be centered and level-headed when you enter a stressful conversation. You know not to send the first draft of an angry email or text to your loved one.

Despite our best intentions, it is hard to put these skills into action, especially when flooded by a wave of emotion. In this workshop, we will teach you what gets in the way of using the skills you already know (and some that you don’t) and help you not get tripped up by fight or flight responses, childhood family messages, and well-worn knee-jerk reactions.

The past two weeks we have been discussing boundaries in the Skills Practice Community that meets weekly on Wednesday evenings. We are consistently reminded that healthy boundaries protect us and help build respectful and fulfilling relationships.

Terry Real outlines five key elements to building healthy boundaries. They are clear and specific and maintained as consistently as possible. Healthy boundaries communicate a persons needs while allowing for negotiation and compromise. They recognize our own personal needs and values as well as the needs and values of the other person.

We will be doing a deeper dive into boundaries during our upcoming 3 hour workshop on February 25th, 2023!

When we are stressed, activated by past trauma, or experiencing relational stress, we fall into our primitive brain which is associated with flight, fight, and freeze. These survival responses are what we refer to as our adaptive parts. These parts have associated physiological and behavioral traits (see below). The wise self is when our prefrontal cortex is communicating with our more primitive brain. This integration fosters compassion, flexibility, and forgiveness.

Join our upcoming 3 hour workshop to learn more about how to manage nervous system activation to give yourself the best chance possible for connection and repair.

Families are strongly impacted by the dynamics associated with Alcoholism, Addiction, Mental Health Issues and Trauma. As one of our facilitators has said, "There is no healthy way to adapt to addiction in a family system". Our mission is healing intergenerational patterns of behavior through connection, education, and practice. Change is possible.

Relational recovery is not a destination, it's a journey. It's the practice of relational mindfulness, the moment by moment awareness of our humanity and our divinity. It's knowing who and what we are, both our instinctive nature and our higher selves. It is both our rational mind and emotional mind... it is the moment to moment practice of humility.

Relationships are essential for our survival as individuals and as a species. We are wired for connection. The state of our relationships make up the state of our lives. How would you describe the state of your most important relationships?
