Limping is one of the most common reasons dog parents get concerned — but it isn’t always as simple as a sore leg. Here are some of the most common mistakes I see as an animal chiropractor:
1. Waiting for it to “work itself out”
Some limps do resolve, but many linger because the body is compensating rather than healing.
2. Assuming limping always means a leg injury
Limping can originate from the spine, pelvis, or nervous system — not just the limb you see.
3. Only watching for pain signs
Dogs may limp without crying or obvious pain — subtle changes still matter.
4. Returning to full activity too quickly
Even if the limp improves, the underlying imbalance may still be present.
5. Ignoring which side keeps showing up
A recurring limp on the same side often points to a deeper issue.
Chiropractic care looks at how the spine, joints, and nervous system work together — because compensation shows up long before pain does.
