World Breastfeeding Week has me reflecting on my personal experience with feeding my children. The ups and downs, sleepless nights, sore body, feeling touched out, the rollercoaster of hormones while weaning.. but also feeling like you're giving your child a gift, and living in those quiet cuddly moments. Such a spectrum of emotion. It was such a bittersweet relationship to end and I was so grateful to have nursed with my children for 3 years and 2 1/2 years respectively..
I could not have done it without the support of people around me. My husband taking on the load of cooking nourishing meals, filling up my water, (SO THIRSTY!!) and burping the babies, and changing diapers to give me a break. My mother-in-law bringing me milkshakes and tube tops from TJ Maxx for easy access and literally "hamburger holding" my breast to help me get a good latch.. my cousin in California sending me homemade ni**le cream and links to the best nursing bras, and texting with me at 2 am to let me air my frustrations.
Support is what helped me have a successful nursing experience, and it's one of the things that made me want to support others. Breast/Chest feeding can look different for everyone, it can look like tube feeding expressed milk, exclusively pumping, supplementing with formula, and for some, it's not possible at all.
This week I'm holding space for those of you who are just beginning this experience, have been through it, or those who were also unable to for whatever reason.
Happy World Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding Week! π€πΌ
