When I got home and emptied my pockets, I found this classic strawberry candy. I grabbed it earlier during my travels through parts of our community, where I participate in events, talk to folks about hospice care, and create opportunities for deeper discussions. Often, I hear the stories of how Amedisys has positively affected the life of a caregiver of someone who was in our care; those conversations are my favorites. And that ties into the significance of this tiny treat I found in my pocket. It represents my WHY, why I choose to work in hospice care: the experience that I had with hospice caring for my precious grandmother.
That little candy was always found deep in the folds of her purse, a secret treat she allowed me to grab whenever I wanted. My grandmother passed in 2019. She was a cornerstone in my life and one of my biggest cheerleaders. My mother, even after the diagnosis and my grandmother's wishes not to treat her disease aggressively, was never quite ready to accept losing her mom and she needed the support in ways she didn’t realize until it was available. For us, hospice care was pivotal in allowing us to spend the most time possible with our loved one, knowing that someone else was taking the wheel in care, education, guidance, and steps to take as we came closer to the end. My mom especially needed the extra support and guidance in the weeks and months following. She still has the cards they sent her after my grandmother's passing, and we both agree that the experience of having a dedicated team of empathetic professionals was the most valuable gift we could have received. I recently found one of these candies inside a bag of hers as I was cleaning out her closet, and now I think of her whenever I see a bowl of them at a community center or senior center on my route.
That's my why. And I love hearing yours.
