OVERUSE INJURIES IN SPORTS | Overuse injuries develop gradually due to repetitive microtrauma to tendons, bones, and joints, unlike acute injuries from single traumatic events. Examples include tennis elbow, swimmer's shoulder, runner's knee, jumper's knee, Achilles tendinitis, and shin splints. They are prevalent and challenging to diagnose and treat in most sports and activities.

The human body adapts to physical stress, becoming stronger and more resilient. However, injuries occur when tissue breaks down faster than it can rebuild. Proper training and sensible practices can prevent most overuse injuries. Listening to your body and allowing sufficient rest between workouts is crucial for recovery and regeneration.

Adhering to the 10-percent rule during training or conditioning is recommended. Avoid increasing your training program or activity by more than 10 percent per week. This rule applies to pace, mileage increments for walkers and runners, and weight added in strength training programs.

If you believe you’re suffering from an overuse injury, request an appointment with one of our sports medicine specialists! www.kocortho.com/experts/sports-medicine/
