• As of May 4, 2020, we are reopening our clinics in both Powell and Sevierville for eye care services. The optical shop will reopen by appointment only, May 4, and will increase to normal operations as advised by the CDC and local government to meet social distancing guidelines.
• Elective surgeries will resume the week of May 11.
• Patients and guests must wear a mask or face covering based on state health recommendations.
• We are ensuring slit lamp protective shields are always used.
• Changes in our patient flow to minimize crowding, limiting visitors allowed in our lobby and planning for social distancing in our waiting area, you and/or your guest may be asked to wait in your car. You can be given a pager, or we can call you on your cell phone when we’re ready to begin your eye exam.
• ALL patients and guests will be screened for coronavirus risk factors using the CDC guidelines upon arrival to our office to ensure contamination within the office is minimized. Temperatures will be taken.
• Employees will continually wipe down high-touch areas to include check-in and check-out areas, chairs, countertops, exam rooms, phones, computers, and door handles. Exam rooms (equipment and furniture) will be wiped down with a FDA-approved disinfectant after each visit.

My grandfather, Dr. T.J. Gallaher, or "Pa", as I knew him, was not only important to me and the family but also to his profession as an optometrist, and to a great many patients over his very long career. There could not have been a better role model for me, and he and my uncle Dr. John Gallaher, are largely responsible for my desire to go into ophthalmology. He is sorely missed, but he leaves an incredible legacy behind and we are all better people for having him in our lives.

It’s estimated that 300 WWII veterans pass away each day, so on this 75th anniversary of D-Day, we note the passing of WWII veteran Thomas J. Gallaher, OD ’51, of Lebanon, Tennessee. He was one of many who returned home on the GI Bill to pursue their education at SCO and build successful practices and careers. On this day of his memorial, D-Day, we salute his memory and all who served:

Did you know? Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of vision loss in adults in the US.

The good news, cataracts are totally reversible! Even if a patient is blinded by cataracts, they can still be addressed.

If you have been told you have cataracts or are over 50, call for an appointment with us at East Tennessee Eye Surgeons to see if cataracts are impairing your vision.
