Muscles can transform quickly with daily exercise. By contracting your muscles as they are being lengthened, you can protect your joints and build long, lean, toned muscles.
The increased tension of contracting while lengthening is known as an eccentric contraction. When muscles are in this lengthened position, they can build greater overall strength and as the muscle fibers stretch, flexibility and range of motion can be improved over time.
Strengthening this way will also improve power, endurance and boost energy.
💥 POWER: Tight muscles reduce our range of motion, which reduces the power available within our muscles. We need to be able to do explosive movements with our muscles as well as slow ones. Power movements are those rapid movements requiring a sudden burst of strength, like changing direction quickly in a sport or sprinting to catch a bus.
☀️ ENDURANCE: The longer you can stay in an exercise (like plies), the stronger your muscles will become over time – increasing the number of mitochondria in your muscles, which increases your energy!
🔥 ENERGY: Eccentric contractions use less oxygen and energy compared to concentric contractions, which can lead to increased endurance and reduced fatigue during workouts.
