This time, five nurses received awards, including Kelly Howard, Christy Kidd, Lacey Siminerio, Lindsey Sexton and Debbie Fox (not pictured).

You know it's going to be a good Tuesday, when it includes a visit to a "Rare Aire" meeting!

Each Tuesday, Prisma Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation-Maryville hosts “Rare Aire,” a gathering of COPD and respiratory patients who use harmonicas to improve lung function.

The group spends an hour practicing their setlist, which includes “Oh, Susanna” and “The Crawdad Song,” improving their respiration and breathing abilities, and just having fun.

And even though performing isn’t their main goal, over the years, they’ve been invited to perform for churches, assisted living facilities and even at the historic Tennessee Theatre!

Above and beyond!

Prisma Health Blount Memorial Hospital registered nurse and oncology navigator Jennifer Collins earned the hospital’s thirteenth DAISY Foundation Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the care she provided the husband of a fellow Blount Memorial employee.

Julie Patterson's husband, Michael, has been undergoing cancer treatment. Collins earned the award after going “above and beyond” for Michael, including remaining in contact with him and helping lift his spirits when he was transferred to Duke University Hospital. “His recovery was so very hard, and he spent over a week in the hospital. Jennifer checked on him daily while we were at Duke,” Julie wrote in Collins' nomination. “His goal was to be home by Christmas, and it was not looking good. With Jennifer’s encouragement and motivation, he was able to meet this goal,” she added.

Both Julie and Michael were on hand to thank Collins and celebrate her when she received her DAISY award.

Prisma Health Total Rehabilitation’s Sports Medicine team was on hand to support the MAC Football Jamboree held today at Alcoa High School!

Not only were we there to support the Tornadoes, but also many other local school teams.

We were excited to be part of Pellissippi State Community College's
Career Carnival on Thursday at their Hardin Valley campus!

The college has been a great collaborator with our nursing program over the years, and we recently added programs for surgical techs and radiologic techs, too!

That’s a wrap!

Our summer VolunTeens officially turned in their badges on Friday after spending portions of the last two months working alongside hospital employees and volunteers in various roles, including rehabilitation, surgery and our family birthplace.

The summer program is open to local students ages 14-17 who are interested in careers in health care.

A big “thank you” to this summer’s VolunTeens! We hope to see you again next summer.

We’re 78 today!

July 24 is a special day for us each year. On this date in 1947, Blount Memorial Hospital first opened its doors to the community.

Times have changed, but our purpose hasn’t. We remain committed to providing excellent health care to people in our community.

We’re grateful to you for letting us care for your family for all these years, and thanks to our employees, staff, physicians and volunteers for helping us do so – today and every day.

Congratulations to Joe Black from Prisma Health Total Rehabilitation, who was elected secretary of the ICCUS Society at the group’s July 2025 meeting!

The ICCUS Society is a group of clinicians, educators and researchers from around the world who are among the most experienced and well-respected practitioners in sports rehabilitation. Black has been a member of the group since 2009.

A first!

Last week, 10 Blount Memorial nurse residents officially graduated from the hospital’s first-ever collaborative nursing residency blending elements of critical care and the emergency department.

The 12-month program helps new nurse graduates successfully transition from their academic studies into clinical nursing through a rigorous combination of orientation and hands-on learning that results in more than 500 hours of training.
