From April 11-17, we observe Black Maternal Health Week.

BMHW is a week-long campaign to build awareness, foster activism, and community-building and amplify perspectives of Black women.

Despite advances in medical care, racial and ethnic disparities associated with preterm birth persist.

In 2022, the rate of preterm birth among Black women (12.34%) was about 1.5 times higher than the rate of preterm birth among white or Hispanic women (7.64% and 8.72% respectively), according to the CDC.

Whispering Waves is an upscale mobile salon and spa in the Knoxville area, and one of my core values is community involvement. Today, I would like to highlight an underserved community. It recently came to my attention that nursing home residents rarely, if ever, have access to clothes, or comfort items, and that personal care is limited. Check to see what your local nursing home accepts while you’re doing your spring cleaning. Most like to get clothes that are easy and comfortable with an elastic waistband, pajama sets, sweaters that zip, nonslip socks in fun colors, blankets and throws that fit comfortably over wheelchairs, decor, stuffed animals, and activities with large print. Travel sized personal care items are easy to distribute, and lotion is a favorite. The next time you take a bag to the thrift store, please consider instead making a care package for your local nursing home instead. 🌊
