A wound requires chronic wound care if it persists for longer than four to six weeks, and a complex wound requires the attention of a medical specialist. There are several causes for the lack of progression and the complicated character of the wounds, and the following variables can be used to explain them:
Patient-related variables (problems with the patient's behavior and participation, as well as a lack of identification of comorbidities or factors contributing to the wound);
Factors relating to the wound itself (exterior, volume, damage to the noble tissues, incorrect diagnosis of the cause of the wound, and failure to identify infectious or ischemic complications);
Factors relating to the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals (lack of standardized or appropriate care protocols);
Factors relating to environmental or social challenges in terms of the resources available for the treatment of the wound.
