Pelvic floor yoga in La Mesa, Ca every Monday in June at 5:30 pm, come join me!

Through a combination of breath work, pose work and restorative sequences these pelvic floor yoga classes will help build a connection to your pelvic floor and will target both the pelvic floor and supporting muscle groups. Each session will wrap up with a restorative sequence that will leave you feeling balanced and invigorated.

Did you know both men and women suffer from pelvic pain?

Since 2017 International Pelvic Pain Society has been honoring those who suffer through spreading awareness about pelvic pain in the month of May. They are also a resource for patients looking to find a pelvic pain specialist or wanting more education about their various diagnoses as pelvic pain covers a broad range of diagnoses. As a clinician I have enjoyed their annual conference and refer to them often for their clinical resources.

Check out their site as they have several virtual events yoga/pilate/5-10k throughout the month.

Connect with others!

Being with others is good for your soul!

Aside from the physical benefits of the poses, yoga is a great platform for receiving all the benefits of what a community offers people. Some of these benefits include a place of belonging, acceptance, fellowship, motivation, education, improved resiliency, stress management, and happiness. Research shows that having support and feeling connected improves resiliency. When people are resilient, they can handle stressful situations better, recover from difficult life circumstances better and overall have a better sense of well-being.

Yoga practice is one fun way, of many ways, to gain the health benefits of what being in community with others offers us.

Release Tight Pelvic Floor Muscles

Tight pelvic floor muscles can cause a variety of symptoms including urgency, frequency, leaking of urine but they can also cause pelvic pain.

Often times the- go- to response when there is any type of pelvic floor issue is “do your Kegels” however I have several issues with this statement.

1. Kegels are hard to do correctly, they require a connection and awareness of the pelvic floor muscles and in my experience many people lack this awareness.

2. Not all pelvic floor issues will get better with Kegel exercises but instead need to be released or stretched- this is most true for pelvic pain conditions.

I think one of the most important aspects of Pelvic Floor Yoga for participants is the focus on learning how to rebuild the mind-pelvis connection through the breath. Rebuilding this sacred connection is key to targeting and healing these muscles and key to knowing when the pelvic muscles are contracted and when they are not.

Through proper breathing, pose selection and an intentionally constructed yoga flow we can begin to gain awareness of what the muscles in our pelvis are doing. By connecting to our pelvic floor we open the door to vibrant healing and the potential to improve pelvic pain.

Improve and possibly prevent urinary incontinence.

Urinary leakage of any form is NOT a normal part of aging!

It is associated with increased depression, isolation, anxiety, medical costs, falls in elderly, loss of work, uti and sexual dysfunction (Coyne, 2013).

The American Urological Association defines urinary incontinence as the complaint of involuntary loss of urine. It affects 25-45% of women and increases as you age; >40% of women 70 and older are affected (Huang, 2021). This number is likely higher because many people are embarrassed to admit or discuss these symptoms.

Women and men are affected by this.

Who is at risk?
• Being Pregnant
• Post vaginal delivery
• Being overweight
• Diabetics
• Deconditioned
• Post-menopausal
• History of Pelvic Surgeries

Aside from Pelvic floor physical therapy, for which I am a huge advocate of, leaking with activities such as laughing, coughing, running called stress urinary incontinence is otherwise treated with procedures or surgery.

Over the more recent years, small clinical studies have shown that group- based yoga therapy for stress incontinence has shown clinically significant improvement in decreasing the frequency of leaking.

To prevent, delay or treat urinary leakage with lifestyle or behavioral treatments such as yoga takes time and consistency, but these clinical studies (we still need more) are proving that it is possible to do.

Let Go of That Stress

Research shows that there are things we can do in our life to improve stress management. These relaxation techniques when done consistently improve dysregulation in our body, improve pain, anxiety and depression and allow for better resiliency when dealing with challenging life factors.

WE ALL HAVE STRESS.

No one is immune from it and most of us are unable to recognize the signs of stress in our bodies.

My pelvic floor yoga course is not a stress management series however the combination of breathing, intention setting, gentle movement and connecting with others makes it a perfect environment to Let Go of That Stress.
