What's one thing everybody believes about myofascial release, but is actually a myth?
"Myofascial Release is a super aggressive and painful deep-tissue massage." ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ซ There are actually more than false statements within this one statement, LoL!
The TRUTH is that REAL Myofascial Release is gentle and never forces anything. Let me put it this way: Have you ever had a deep tissue massage, and noticed that, whether you wanted it to or not, that your body was tensing up? Well it's tensing up because it's trying to protect you... Approaching the body, especially the fascia, with too much force actually creates the opposite effect. Your fascia will begin to brace and go into protective mode. You'll enter into a fight or flight state. When you enter into a fight or flight state, your body releases endorphins... And endorphins feel amazing! But once those wear off, many times, you're left feeling worse than you did when you went in, or best case scenario, you feel the same as when you initially went in.
FACT: The fascia cannot be forced to let go. No matter how hard or aggressive you get, it will not let go. You may break up some surface adhesions, but past that, more likely than not, you are only creating more damage (possibly even injury) to the system. ๐ญ Think about it: If your body is tensing up, isn't that the exact opposite of what you're trying to accomplish? Don't you want it to let go? If it's tensing up, I can guarantee you it's not letting go. ๐
Fascia will only respond to a gentle approach. It needs a gentle compression or traction into the restricted area, using a sustained hold that lasts at least 7 to 8 minutes before a real release actually occurs.
So here's the gist of it: Gentleness + Patience= REAL Release and Healing.
When it comes to healing, there's no such thing as a "quick fix". In reality, a "quick fix" is really just a "temporary solution".
