Today we recognize Black Balloon Day — a time to remember lives lost to overdose and honor the families, friends and communities affected.

We pause to reflect, to hold space for grief and to continue advocating for compassion, understanding and access to care.

Self-harm is often a coping response to overwhelming emotional pain, stress, or distress. For teens and young adults, it can be connected to anxiety, depression, trauma, or difficulty regulating emotions. While it may not always be visible, it’s an important signal that someone is struggling and needs support.

Awareness helps families recognize when it’s time to look beyond behavior and focus on underlying needs. With the right level of care, teens and young adults can learn safer ways to cope and begin to heal.
