Historical Naturalization and Immigration Laws from 1790 through 1952

Did your ancestors immigrate and later get naturalized? The laws have changed many times since the first one in 1790. I have put together a Quick Reference Guide that summarizes the changes in the Naturalization laws from 1790 through 1952. Hopefully, it will help you understand the laws at the times your ancestors (especially women) tried to acquire (or even lost) U.S. citizenship.

💡 Genealogy Tip Tuesday: Always review the page before and after your ancestor’s record. You’ll often discover relatives, neighbors, or witnesses hiding nearby! 👀

Good morning! Have you ever stopped to think about the accuracy of your family's history, and how it's been passed down through generations? I, too, have often found myself pondering the validity of the stories shared within my own family, wondering what's fact and what's fiction. Many of us have wondered whether the tales told in our youth were entirely factual or embellished for entertainment value, making us question the truth behind the legends. Wouldn't you like to uncover the truth behind the stories that have been shared at family gatherings, and get to the bottom of the mysteries that have been hidden for so long? Wouldn't you like to know if your ancestors were really as brave, or as daring, as you've been led to believe? Wouldn't you like to separate fact from fiction, and uncover the real history of your family's past?

Genealogists! Here's a great research tip to find more family members who lived in the area where your ancestors lived. Did you know that you can jump straight from a Billion Graves record to a matching record on FamilySearch!
Just follow these 5 simple steps:
1) Go to BillionGraves.com and select the "Search" button.
2) Enter the last name you are searching for, such as "Cheney" or "Finch". Leave the first name field blank.
3) Select "Advanced Search".
4) Enter the location where your ancestors lived. Try both a broad search for the area (such as the state or county) and a more specific search for a particular cemetery.
5) When a search result shows a matching last name and also shows a first name that you do not recognize from your family tree, you may have found a gold mine! Click on the name. Then scroll down to the section labeled "View on FamilySearch". Follow the link to see that person on the FamilySearch tree. Then do some traditional research to see how they are related to your family. Eureka!
