Discomfort can feel overwhelming, especially when our nervous system has learned to protect us through avoidance. Healing invites us to move slowly, with support, and to remember that discomfort is not danger. It can be a signal that growth is happening.

Recovery teaches us that love does not require self-abandonment. When we begin honoring our needs, setting boundaries, and choosing honesty over approval, we create space for healthier connections. Believing we are worthy of love and respect allows us to step away from relationships that harm us and move toward ones that support growth, accountability, and care.

In recovery, progress rarely looks like a giant leap forward. More often, it begins with a small, quiet choice: to ask for help, to tell the truth, to stay when it would be easier to leave. Those steps may feel uncertain or fragile, but they carry more power than we realize. Healing doesn’t require perfection or confidence, only the willingness to keep moving forward, one moment at a time.

Recovery asks us to face the parts of ourselves that once kept us stuck; the excuses, the fear, the inner voice that says we can’t. Healing begins when we choose to keep going anyway, despite that inner voice. One honest step at a time, we learn we are stronger than the excuses and greater than the doubt.

The holidays can bring up old memories, unmet expectations, and lingering resentments. In recovery, we’re reminded that holding onto those feelings often costs us more than we realize — our peace, our presence, and moments that could have been meaningful. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the past; it means choosing to protect our energy and create space for what truly matters during this season. As the year comes to a close, we’re invited to release what no longer serves us and make room for connection, healing, and moments worth holding onto.

As part of our goal to highlight some of our core curriculum here at The Rose House, we asked one of our primary therapists, Dr. Barbara Flood, to sit down and tell us about Dialetic Behavioral Therapy. In our conversation, Barb shared why DBT is such a powerful tool in recovery. DBT is an evidence-based approach designed to help individuals navigate intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, and create healthier, more meaningful relationships.

Barb walked us through the four core components of DBT:
• Mindfulness: cultivating awareness of thoughts and emotions without judgment.
• Distress Tolerance: learning how to survive overwhelming moments without turning to harmful coping mechanisms.
• Emotion Regulation: understanding and managing emotions that may once have felt unmanageable.
• Interpersonal Effectiveness: communicating clearly, setting boundaries, and maintaining healthy connections.

We are incredibly grateful for Barb’s decade of dedication, compassion, and expertise. Her work continues to help our clients find stability, hope, and the confidence to keep moving forward.

Some days in recovery are heavy. Some days are hopeful. Gratitude doesn’t erase the hard moments but rather helps us hold onto them with more compassion. When we learn to be grateful for progress instead of perfection, we discover that enough is already within reach.

We want to formally welcome Shelby Walkinshaw to The Rose House staff as our new primary therapist! Shelby grew up in the wide-open spaces of Wyoming, where a deep connection to nature and animals first inspired her passion for understanding the human spirit and its relationship to the natural world. She began her professional journey as an educator, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. After many years of teaching, Shelby followed her calling to support others in deeper, more personal ways, completing a Master of Arts in Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.

Shelby is also a certified death doula, companioning individuals and families through end-of-life transitions with compassion, presence, and reverence. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), where she continues to explore the intersections of consciousness, psychology, and spirituality. Shelby’s approach to therapy is integrative, experiential, and grounded in presence. She draws from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gestalt, and Existential therapy, weaving in Interpersonal and person-centered approaches to create a compassionate, individualized experience for each client. Her work often includes inviting clients to reconnect with their inner wisdom through body awareness and the natural world.

Outside of her professional life, Shelby finds joy and grounding in the natural world. She loves hiking, camping, skiing and snowboarding, and spending quality time with her two children and her beloved dog, Higgins. On quieter days, you might find her throwing around a kettlebell or simply soaking up the beauty of the outdoors.

Welcome Shelby!!
