In the know:
Do you know how to administer Narcan?
Naxolone, also known as Narcan, is an emergency nasal treatment of opioid overdose. It consists of the nozzle and the plunger. One device contains one dose and each device only sprays one time.

Here are a few tips:
Step 1: Check
Check if you suspect an overdose, the individual will not wake up or appear very sleepy or not breathing well.
-Yell “Wake up!”
-Shake the person gently
-If the individual is not awake, move to step 2.
Step 2: Give
-Give 1st dose in the nose
-Hold nasal spray device with thumb on plunger and a finger on each side of the nozzle
-Insert nozzle into one nostril and press plunger firmly
Step 3: Call 911
-Get medical help immediately after giving first dose, CALL 911 NOW!
Step 4: Watch and give
-Wait 2-3 minutes after 1st dose to give medication time to work. If the person wakes up go to step 5.
-If the person doesn’t wake up, give a second dose, using a new device.
Step 5: Stay
-Stay until the ambulance arrives; even if the person wakes up. GIVE another dose if the person becomes very sleepy again.

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is an approach that focuses on reducing the negative consequences of certain behaviors—especially risky ones—rather than solely aiming to eliminate the behavior. It’s grounded in the belief that people make decisions based on their circumstances and personal challenges, and that a compassionate, non-judgmental approach can help improve their health and well-being.

In the context of substance use, for example, harm reduction doesn’t just aim to stop people from using drugs or alcohol; instead, it provides tools and strategies to reduce the risks of overdose, disease transmission, and other harmful effects. This might include things like providing clean needles, educating people about safer usage practices, offering naloxone (a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses), or creating spaces for supervised consumption.

Harm reduction emphasizes dignity, respect, and personal autonomy, and recognizes that people can still lead healthier, safer lives even if they don’t fully stop their risky behavior. It’s about reducing harm—one step at a time.
