Our brains are always looking for what is relevant. It is our attention patterns over time, that tell our brains what we want more of.
If you spend the majority of your time checking in on your body or symptoms, or replaying stressful events, your brain will take this to mean that these things are very important to you, and you want more of those particular thoughts/feelings.
It is often the combination of attention + emotion (fear is a big one) that shows the brain what is important. Sometimes, this can keep us stuck in a loop of pain/symptoms/limitations.
This is a very simple concept in neuroscience, but does take time to put into practice and change. Thankfully the brain is very adaptable!
This isn't about shaming yourself for your thoughts, but simply starting with awareness. What do you find yourself coming back to over and over again through the day? What things do you tend to ruminate on?
Once you identify these old pathways, or patterns you wish to change, you can start diverting your attention slowly but consistently. Giving yourself space and compassion, redirecting to something more positive or at least neutral, or practicing indifference towards symptoms/stressors.
It's all about the baby steps, my friends! But just like social media feeds change based on what we engage with, our brains can do the same over time!
