Each of the families I have served have such a special place in my heart. It has been a great privilege to care for families in the most precious and momentous of moments. For that reason and many more, it’s with a heavy heart that I announce that we have decided that continuing this work will need to wait until a different season of life.

To each woman who has trusted me to support her in such vulnerable and sacred moments, I hope you see the strength that I witnessed in you, and I hope you know how much the work of caring for tiny humans matters.

Blessings 💛

Joy. Elation. Strength. Happy tears. First moments locking eyes with a tiny new human. There is much beauty to behold as a doula.

But there is also:

Blood to be wiped up.
Vomit to be caught and wiped off a laboring mother’s face.
Sweat to be dabbed at with a cold cloth.
Nights of missed sleep.
Many missed plans and an uncertain calendar.
Knees to be knelt on for hours and hours while giving counter pressure.
The possibility of witnessing birth trauma.
Heavy eyes that must be shaken awake because a laboring mother’s needs come first.

When I serve families as a doula, sometimes it’s very hard work. But there’s really no job I’d rather do! There is tremendous value in serving families as they welcome new life, and I want the experience to be as wonderful as possible.

When you’re in labor, the only one you need to think about is YOU! If I can give clients the space to do that, to help their needs be cared for so they can labor away peacefully, then every bit of the hard parts are worth it.

During the pushing phase of labor, many mothers who have freedom of movement will automatically move into the position that is most comfortable for them and Baby. But having an epidural does not mean you can’t choose to be off your back. There are position options for epidurals, also!

“Positions that take the weight off the sacrum and allow the pelvis to expand might make spontaneous birth (birth without the use of vacuum or forceps assistance) more likely (Edqvist et al. 2016).”

This article focuses on the evidence for birthing positions in the second stage of labor. The second stage of labor begins when the cervix is completely dilated (open) and ends with the birth of the baby.

I wrapped up a postpartum visit today and my heart felt full. I feel grateful to help moms have better beginnings.

But I’m not the only one who can help. Often when everyone is amazed by the preciousness of a new baby, we forget to ask “Who will care for Mom?”

I think part of a doula’s role is to educate the community about how to support moms better.

Some questions I ask myself in preparation for a postpartum visit are:
- How can I help mom nourish herself and care for herself physically today?
- How can I help her to feel heard and seen?
- How can I instill confidence in her capability and in her innate wisdom?
- How can I help her accomplish some of those little things that have to be put aside with a new baby, but that she would really like done?

The next time you go visit a new baby, ask yourself “How can I care for Mom?”

One of the best ways to get breastfeeding off to a good start is to have uninterrupted skin to skin for the first hour, and for the baby to lead the way in latching. It doesn’t mean breastfeeding can’t be beautifully successful without immediate, uninterrupted skin to skin. But, when possible, this gives mom and baby the best chance at a smooth start.
