Self-care seems to be the buzz word these days.

A quick internet search can populate thousands of different articles, research posts, personal blogs, and videos that debate what self care is and isn’t, how often we should be engaging in it, and the appropriate ratios and formulas to achieving it.

Many of these even appear to be in contrast with one another, with one trend suggesting daily intensive exercise and the other suggesting limiting it entirely. In short, it can all be super confusing.

Our friends at Ohana Counseling & Wellness Services have some real world tips for tackling self-care ⤵
Please join us in applauding one of our own, Amanda Metcalf. She has achieved so much in her life and has been kicking butt this week! We know there are still more great things to come and we're so proud of you Amanda!

The iconic family classic, Lilo & Stitch, immortalized the phrase “‘Ohana means family.” However, many people assume that this refers to “family” in the traditional sense. In reality, the term ‘Ohana is meant to celebrate our “extended” or “adopted” family as well. In simpler terms, it's the family we choose. We can have close attachments and relationships with friends, members of our community, even colleagues.

Here at our Ohana, we work hard to foster that same sense of community and belonging with both our clients and our staff members. ❤️

The postpartum period is an intensive transitional time that can involve new responsibilities, identity shifts, relational changes, and physiological healing. 🤍

It's important to create an environment that is nurturing and safe for new mamas to navigate their transition into motherhood.

Men have been taught to "man up" for many years. Unfortunately, acknowledging “vulnerable” emotions, asking for support, or expressing struggles with mental health are things that have been greatly stigmatized despite the prevalence of mental health struggles among men.

Research shows us that at least 9% of men in the U.S. alone report daily feelings of depression and anxiety, and 33% of men report having lived through a period of depression in their lifetime.

These men are not weak or broken. Showing emotion, needing support, or struggling at times, are all a part of being human, regardless of your gender. 🤍

It’s ok to not be ok.

One of the hardest lessons to learn in life is that despite our best efforts, we cannot control how others think, feel, or act toward/ about us. However, the more we explore the relationship we have with ourselves, the more we learn to regulate our own reactions and influence outcomes in that manner. Therapy provides a safe place to learn how to navigate our complex nervous systems, and slow down our reactive responses.

If you are interested in connecting with one of our therapists to help navigate your healing journey, schedule your appointment today by calling us at (407) 603-5636 or on our website ohanacounselingandwellness.com ✨

As a first responder, we understand you’re working under constant stress and pressure. You’re the first to give help, but often the last to receive it. The cumulative stress of the job can lead to dangerous repercussions if not appropriately addressed.

At Ohana, we believe there’s a better way than the traditional “tough it out” approach.

We provide convenient and confidential services that are specifically tailored to you and your unique needs as a police officer, firefighter, emergency medical technician, or military member.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness – in fact, it’s the opposite. Your counseling session is a judgement free zone, and a place where you can safely share your difficult experiences; allowing you to better support the people who need you most, and get back to the job you were meant to do.

If you are seeking support, don't hesitate to reach out to us! Call us at 407-603-5636 or request an appointment at ohanacounselingandwellness.com 💙

Happy Monday! ☀️

Does is ever feel like you’re stuck on a constant hamster wheel of “busy?”

Between the demands of work and life, most of us are constantly juggling a ton! When our to-do list gets too overwhelming, taking care of ourselves can start to feel less like a priority and more like a pipe dream.

We may even begin to make promises to ourselves regarding our lack of self care. “When things slow down a little..”
“After the kids are back in school..”
“Once I get this promotion…”

Pushing on for days, weeks, or months without doing the work to recharge can lead to burnout, anxiety/depression, relationship difficulties, and more.

If you’re not taking care of yourself-physically and emotionally-everything around you can suffer.

Here are some simple self-care practices to invite to your daily life! 🧡

We wanted to share with you different ways to tend to your anxiety. Not only can these help when anxiety arises, but it can also provide you with long-term relief. 🌬️

✨ Deep breathing: Simple technique that can help you become present and return back to your body. A way of doing this is by inhaling in for 4 seconds, holding for 4 seconds, and exhaling for 6 seconds. This is a great way to regulate your nervous system.

✨ Progressive Muscle Relaxation: By tensing and relaxing the muscles throughout your body, you can provide your body with relaxation. This practice can also help with your connection to your body by having it teach you to recognize feelings of muscle tension. A way of practicing this is by squeezing your thighs together tightly, then letting them relax.

✨ Challenging Irrational Thoughts: Irrational thoughts can become present when we are experiencing anxiety and then impact how you feel. By sitting in stillness and recognizing what your thoughts are telling you – you can then challenge them. You can ask yourself questions such as, “Are my thoughts based on my feelings or are they factual?” Providing a space to explore your mind and see where your thoughts are coming from.

✨ Imagery: Providing a space where you get to picture and think of something positive and calming can help aid your sense of anxiety. For example: Think of a space you find yourself to be at ease, and REALLY make it come to life in your mind. What do you see around you? Notice the small details. What do you smell? Does the temperature feel warm or cool? – take your mind into an immersive experience of sensations.

The Climb is a community walk and international fundraiser for survivors, providers, and members of the community to come together.

Raising awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, The Climb brings our community together to shine a light on a darkness we often don’t speak about. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complication of childbearing. ✨

What a pleasure it was to connect with community and for everyone involved with this event!

Compassion fatigue, also known as vicarious trauma. Numerous items can happen when we are exposed to other people’s trauma for a long period of time where a sense of numbing and detachment may happen. It is very common for individuals in fields such as and not limited to: military, therapists, first responders, health care professionals, and advocates for domestic abuse. What tends to happen is a chronic neglect of tending to the Self, which leads to symptoms such as emotional disconnection, irritability, physical exhaustion, etc.

We want to provide you with the tools and skills to overcome compassion fatigue! Seeking help is not a sign of weakness – in fact, it’s the opposite. Your counseling session is a judgment free zone, and a place where you can safely share your difficult experiences; allowing you to better support the people who need you most, and get back to the job you were meant to do.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness – in fact, it’s the opposite. Your counseling session is a judgment free zone, and a place where you can safely share your difficult experiences; allowing you to better support the people who need you most, and get back to the job you were meant to do.

If any of these scenarios sound familiar, you are not alone, and we can help.

👉You feel the need to self medicate with alcohol, s*x, or recreational drugs
👉You’ve experienced traumatic situations
👉You have trouble sleeping or winding down from shifts
👉You feel guilty taking time for yourself, but also feel exhausted, irritable, or disconnected from yourself or family
👉You have difficulty leaving work at work
👉You’re unable to express your needs to others
👉You constantly observe others who are in pain or suffering, and it’s taking its toll on your own life

We can help you process feelings of overwhelm or burnout, so that you can get back to living a healthy, fulfilled life.
