Why is histamine everywhere since 2020? ⬇️

There are many reasons COVID could have set off those symptoms—whether by uncovering hidden imbalances, triggering mast cell activation, fueling inflammation, or over-activating the immune system.

For many of us (hi, it’s me) these reactions aren’t random; they’re signs that the body was already out of balance—overloaded by low-grade chronic symptoms, poor diet, environmental toxins, poor mitochondrial health, and stress.

COVID was simply the final straw that pushed things over the edge.

I know this personally, as this virus flipped my world upside down. It was the hardest experience of my life, but it also led me to the healthiest version of myself today. And I don’t blame the virus. It could have been anything ❤️

The connection is strong, often overlooked, and an area severely lacking in research.

PMDD can be debilitating and my patients tend to want more options than just birth control & meds…

👉…Especially since women with ADHD may be more likely to experience side effects to birth control pills!

We don’t know exactly what causes PMDD but it seems to be due to increased sensitivity to hormone changes. 

That doesn’t explain why some cycles are horrible and some are really mild, or absolutely no PMDD.

One factor that could be at play is neuroinflammation, or inflammation of the brain and nervous system.

Neuroinflammation is correlated with ADHD, ASD, and PMDD.

ADHD is real 👇

…and…

Your environment and lifestyle can majorly impact symptoms. 

Whether you are diagnosed with ADHD or not, it will be challenging to focus, regulate emotions, and feel GOOD:

•Working in a job you hate
• Living under constant, high levels of stress
• If you’re hopped up on sugar, caffeine, and winding down with alcohol every night
• If you’re under slept or not properly sleeping due to sleep apnea or another issue
• if your diet isn’t working for you 
• If you have sky high histamine levels
• You need novelty and variety and life is asking you to sit still 8 hours a day 
• You get 7 hours and 39 minutes of screen time each day

If your life is out of alignment, symptoms of ADHD are going to be more intense (or appear out of nowhere). 

Treatment needs to include diet, lifestyle, stress management, and support with life factors. 

And yes, ADHD is real. This post is not contesting that.

This space continues to grow and I wanted to take a moment to re-introduce myself!⁣

🌎 My name is Laura Gouge (rhymes with rouge). I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and have also called Seattle, Portland, and now Austin, Texas my home. ⁣

👩‍⚕️I’m a licensed naturopathic physician with a focus in holistic ADHD & mental health, and a certified nutrition specialist. I work with people virtually, and provide services all over the country. I offer 1:1 sessions for children and adults, support people with nutritional and ADHD coaching, and also run a group program called Focus & Ease for adults with symptoms of ADHD several times per year. ⁣

I primarily work with people in the space beyond medications. There is a time and a place where medication might be necessary (and I’ve worked as a prescriber for years!). At this time, I’m passionate about everything beyond meds. Why is the body creating these symptoms? How can we adjust the lifestyle with nutrition, sleep, movement, hydration, and cultivating JOY. Are there underlying infections, genetic factors, nutritional issues, GI symptoms, or hormonal connections that might be making things worse? That is why people come to see me. ⁣

📚 I periodically lecture at academic conferences and teach at the naturopathic universities on topics related to holistic mental health, integrative treatment of PTSD, and all-things ADHD. ⁣
