FYI.

A Tennessee state run residential school for students with disabilities has to close because of the federal government shut down.

Students at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center were forced off campus due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, leaving families scrambling and students in tears.

Sticker charts and token economies are not trauma-informed. They do not meet needs or teach replacement behaviors.

They teach compliance and training and do not allow for assent or autonomy for clients.

Throw them away.

Build relationships.

Compassion and connection over control!!!

I said what I said. 😊

All of this!

All of this!

Medically complex children and their families are left out of discussions of school absenteeism like this one. Zero tolerance policies harm kids who miss school because of medical appointments, sick days, and the endless surprises that come with being disabled. If your school district is discussing this topic, it's time for ALL families to be included.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, well a lot of people do!

You MUST collect baseline first, before writing a goal. In fact the baseline data should be included in the goal.

Collecting baseline data after the goal is written makes no sense and certainly does not help the student/client.

Data based decisions.

Interesting fact about Down Syndrome.

Interesting fact about Down Syndrome.

The bodies of people with Down syndrome regulate body temperature differently compared to people without Down syndrome. This may be due to multiple factors including differences in blood flow to the skin, sweating, and, in some individuals, abnormal thyroid function. While more research is needed, some of the possible implications of these differences are shared below.

😓 People with Down syndrome may not be able to cool down in the typical fashion when the outside or room temperature is high and/or they are exercising.
🚰 People with Down syndrome may need to drink more cool water, take more breaks, or move to a cooler place when their body temperature increases.
🤒 Fever response may not be a reliable measure of infection in some people with Down syndrome.

Brian Chicoine, MD, shares more information on temperature regulation in people with Down syndrome in the article linked below.

Staying true to your values as a BCBA and RBT is key… clients and families depend on you and your knowledge.

It should be all about the clients, not billables and sales tactics!
