Kids Can Be Cruel – Let’s Talk About It
As adults, we often remember the sting of words spoken to us as children. Sadly, many kids today are still experiencing the same—sometimes even worse—through teasing, bullying, exclusion, and online harassment.
For children and teens, cruelty from peers can leave deep emotional scars. It’s not “just part of growing up.” It can affect self-esteem, mental health, and even academic performance.
Why does it happen?
• Lack of empathy or emotional awareness
• Peer pressure and a desire to fit in
• Modeling negative behavior from others
• Struggles with their own insecurities
What can we do as parents, caregivers, and mentors?
• Listen without judgment. Let your child know they are heard and believed.
• Validate their feelings. Acknowledge that what they’re experiencing is real and painful.
. Teach empathy. Help kids see the impact of their words and actions on others.
• Model kindness. Show them what respectful communication looks like.
• Empower, don’t just protect. Teach strategies for responding to unkind behavior and building resilience.
At Dunn’s Integrity Counseling, I believe in creating safe spaces for children and families to work through these challenges.
If you or someone you know is struggling to process the lasting impact of childhood bullying or cruelty, remember that healing is possible. Whether the pain is fresh or from years ago, it’s never too late to address it, rebuild confidence, and learn healthier ways to respond.
You don’t have to carry those wounds alone—support is available, and your story matters.
