Global health impact is more than a really cool concept it’s a commitment to reach, teach, and serve. 🌍

When students step beyond the classroom and into real communities, learning becomes personal, practical, and powerful.

Experiential learning allows students to engage directly with global health challenges, collaborate across cultures, and see firsthand how knowledge can translate into meaningful impact.

By reaching communities with humility, teaching through shared knowledge, and serving with purpose, students gain skills that no textbook alone can provide: empathy, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of their role in improving health outcomes worldwide.

This is how future leaders are shaped: through experience, connection, and service that lasts far beyond the classroom.

🌍 PAs in Global Health: A Call to Action 🌍

Around the world, millions of people lack access to timely, quality healthcare, not because solutions don’t exist, but because the solutions are complicated.
This is where Physician Assistants (PAs) and equivalent roles play a critical role in closing the gap.

In many countries, this profession goes by different names:
Clinical Officer
Associate Clinician
Medical Officer
or even Chief Medical Officer, but the mission is the same: deliver high-quality, patient-centered care where it’s needed most. These professionals often serve as the backbone of high need healthcare systems, especially in underserved and rural communities.

As PAs and healthcare leaders, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to global health equity:
Strengthening primary care systems
Expanding access in low-resource settings
Supporting task-shifting and team-based care
Upskilling local healthcare workers

💡 Now is the time:
We must engage, through advocacy, education, collaboration, and service.

Whether it’s partnering with Global Health ImPAct ,supporting policy that recognizes PA-equivalent roles worldwide, or volunteering our skills and expertise, our participation matters.

Global health is not someone else’s responsibility, it’s a shared one.
Let’s use our highly skilled training, adaptability, and commitment to care to help fill the gaps in global healthcare.

Alumni Highlight: Brittany LaBonte ~ PA-C, Associate Professor at Franklin College ⭐️

Today we’re celebrating Brittany LaBonte, who led a service-learning medical mission to rural Belize, where many community members face long travel distances and limited access to healthcare. Working with minimal supplies – often only what the team brought with them- Brittany and her colleagues practiced what they called “MacGyver medicine,” adapting creatively to deliver meaningful care.

Brittany says, “The experience, reinforced the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and culturally responsive, holistic care. It was both humbling and eye-opening, reminding us that meaningful impact is not about resources alone, but about presence, creativity, and partnership with the community.”

Brittany says that she returned a better educator and clinician and hopes to return to Belize to serve the same community.

We’re so proud to share Brittany’s experience and the ways she has served to improve global health 💙

Alumni Highlight: Corbi Sandoe ~ Pediatric PA-C 🌟

Corbi led a team of PA students and healthcare providers on a medical mission trip to Belize! They performed knee injections and musculoskeletal exams on local farm workers and saw patients with hypertension and diabetes.

They also held a pediatric day at the clinic and did well visits, newborn visits, and weight checks and treated rashes and cold symptoms.

“Once people knew we were there, people with many other ailments came to be seen.”

Corbi described how the biggest impact made was working alongside the healthcare system that was already in place and supporting them with the skills they had to offer.

“If we don’t have a sustainable partner to work with, then our efforts are really minimal or acute. One of the focuses of GHI is to make sure to have local partners to create sustainability to the people we serve.”
