Angel the birth doula Hello! My name is Angel McLarty and I am a birth doula located in Lakeland, FL & surrounding areas!

I got permission to share a birth story from one of the mamas I helped! It’s absolutely amazing how vividly you will remember your birth story, even the little details!!

“I was induced two days after I was due, due to gestational diabetes I didn’t know what I was in for because my cervix didn’t dilate on its own, at first they tried cervidil and within 12 hours. I was only 1 cm dilated . It was very scary because I did not want to medicated birth by any means, but by the end of the second day, they told me I’d have to start Pitocin and I knew it came with Pitocin was harder contractions I was TERRIFIED my contractions already had me to my knees and thankfully I had angel there with me because I can’t think of how many times I said I can’t do this until she arrived and was so helpful between helping me get around my room, helping me find comfortable positions massaging me for comfort …so I went ahead and did the epidural and started the Pitocin and by the morning time it was time to have my son Angel 😇 was in the room with me while I gave birth, holding my hand and reminding me that I am strong and I had this and it was in my control and she was there and not gonna let anything happen to me or my child and within 30 minutes of pushing, I had my beautiful boy… honestly I don’t know how the experience would’ve went for me without her because before she got there, I was truly afraid and alone fighting hard contractions that felt like my hips were breaking..I just could never be more thankful.”

What an absolute blessing!! I am very lucky this mama chose me to be her doula! It made the whole experience a positive one 💕

Considering breastfeeding??

The golden hour usually initiates the first feed and it is so magical ✨ Checking for a good latch is essential for the comfort of the mother and for an adequate milk flow to the newborn. When the baby’s ear is moving, it can tell that the latch is pretty good. There should be about one to two sucks per swallow.

Pumping is also a great option if the latch is not good and the baby will be getting all of the delicious personalized nutrients!!

Whether you breastfed for one minute, one month, or one+ years, GREAT job mama!!! 💕

This mama has a peanut ball between her legs, this is so helpful to shorten the first stage of labor by almost 30 minutes!!!! This method really helps open the cervix and strengthens those uterine contractions. You can use a peanut ball in many different positions!

What do you think!? Have you used it?

Let’s talk about PRO-NOX as pain relief during labor!! This is one of the first least invasive options for pain relief. The ratio is usually a 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is used by tubing connected to a mask, the line provides continuous air flow into the mask. The mask has a soft border that is pressed to the nose and mouth. This option is effective immediately when the mama takes a deep breath and breathes into the mask during the entire contraction. This option helps with anxiety and pain relief.

I’ve had a mama tell me it “took the edge off but not the entire pain of the contraction.” She had an overall positive birth experience. It is always a great idea to tour the local hospital or birthing center and see which forms of pain relief are an option if that is the route you want to go.

What do you think? Have you tried it?

How do you prefer fetal monitoring during labor?

When I had my son I had to do continuous external fetal monitoring which involved two tight bands across my belly and a cord that did not allow me much movement during labor.

A few months after I had my son, I was a doula for a very close friend. I learned the hospital she attended did wireless fetal monitoring. In this monitoring, the mama was allowed freedom to move and labor how she desired! She was able to utilize the birth ball, peanut ball, and get into positions that helped her quickly dilate. This was part of her birth plan and that freedom of movement really helped to get things going! What a game changer for labor!!!

My goal is to create a positive and empowering birth experience for the laboring mother and partner. Having a doula minimizes the chance of assisted vaginal delivery (forceps/vacuum cups) and minimizes the risk of having a cesarean birth. Ultimately with a doula, you’ll have direct attention and have a more satisfying birth experience! 💜

My favorite question is “what’s a doula?”

A doula is a support person before, during and after delivery. A doula is educated in childbirth and all of the stages of labor. The goal is to follow mom’s birth plans and be there to help for a safe and smooth delivery of your new baby! ❤️
