We judge people’s behavior as a personality flaw far more often than we should.

Research shows that when we observe someone snap or act out of character, we instinctively blame who they are instead of the situation they’re in. Even when we know the behavior is constrained by stress, pressure, or lack of choice, our brains still default to character based explanations.

This bias explains a lot of unnecessary judgment.

People don’t understand most things as well as they think they do.

In a series of psychological studies, researchers found that people feel very confident about how things work, until they’re asked to explain them step by step. The moment they have to explain how something works, confidence tends to collapse.

The brain confuses familiarity with understanding, and certainty often survives only because it’s never been tested.

Also, that discomfort people feel when their beliefs are challenged isn’t always about being wrong. It’s about realizing they never understood it as deeply as they thought.

Your brain is bad at predicting how long happiness will last.

Psychology research on affective forecasting shows we misdjudge how long positive events affect our mood. In a classic study of college football fans, people believed wins or losses would shape their happiness far longer than they actually did.

This happens because of something called focalism which is when we fixate on one future event and forget that life keeps moving.
