Miss Claire got creative in feeding therapy this week, turning broccoli, carrots, string cheese, and oats into a pretend zoo to make food exploration fun, engaging, and stress-free.

What Is Feeding Therapy?

Feeding therapy, provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist, focuses on helping children safely and confidently eat a wider variety of foods. It addresses the oral-motor skills needed for chewing and swallowing, sensory processing (tolerating textures, smells, and tastes), and the behavioral and emotional components of eating.

In sessions like this, therapists often use play-based, low-pressure activities to:
• Increase comfort with new or non-preferred foods
• Build positive associations with eating
• Encourage exploration before tasting
• Support chewing, biting, and oral coordination
• Reduce stress around mealtimes

Creating a “zoo” turns food into something fun and approachable, which is especially helpful for picky eaters or children with feeding aversions.
