What hobbies, activities or self-care do you do for YOURSELF that give you joy?
Let’s get real here. There have been seasons in my life where I would have responded to that question by saying, “I don’t know, I don’t have time for hobbies,” especially during the time in my life when my children were younger and more demanding of time and energy.
In that season, having time leftover at the end of the day where I wasn’t completely exhausted from trying to keep up with “all the things…”Honestly?!? My hobby was getting to take a shower. 🤦🏻♀️🙈
Now, I could recall what hobbies and activities brought me joy before having kids, and pretty vividly actually, but in that season, I was 💯 laser focused on my kids and providing them with all the appropriate, fun activities to keep them engaged and learning all day long. I was fortunate to be home with them during their early years and prior to being home with them, they went to work with me, which was also a great privilege as an educator in preschool programs. It was hard, but it brought me joy 🥹 and I would not replace it with any hobby.
The issue here is that there was no balance. I replaced one joy for another. Children should enhance your life, not replace it. In order to teach our children this, we have to set the example, we have to show that making ourselves a priority once in a while is really good, otherwise we are teaching them to be “people pleasers.” We all know the saying, “you can’t please everyone.” It is absolutely true. YOUR happiness is YOUR responsibility. You can be kind, you can think of others, you can give your time to others, but ultimately YOU are in charge of YOU; therefore, YOU choose what to spend YOUR time on.
Listen, I know, I know, ✋hold on-if you are a busy women like me, finding more time in your day when there is so much to be done, feels extremely hard to do. I am NOT talking about spending a large amount of time, just begin with small increments-15 minutes. What could you do for 15 minutes that would be just for you to bring you joy today? It’s okay, give the kids their technology and call it, “environmental enrichment time,” (I just learned that term 🤣) and do something for YOU- set a timer, prep it the night before or keep it in a bin that is easily accessible.
So what’s it going to be? Could you…
-Read a book 📚
-Meditate 🧘🏻♀️
-Take a walk 🚶🏻♀️
-Complete a crossword 📖
-Pull weeds/ water your garden 🪴
-Work on a craft
-Paint, crochet, sew, cross-stitch…
-Put photos in an album
I challenge you to find 15 minutes each day of the week to do something that brings you joy and bring balance to your life and let me know what it is and how it makes you feel.
