HEALTH TIP:
The Benefits of Hot Tea
Turns out, sipping a hot cup of tea is not only comforting while youâre feeling under the weather, but according to research, itâs chock-full of benefits to help you combat this seasonâs biggest sickness.
According to research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, drinking black tea is a major immune booster. The study, out of Brigham and Womenâs Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School, found that people who drank five cups of black tea a day for two weeks saw their immune system T cells pumping out 10 times more cold and flu virus-fighting interferon.
Green tea is another noteworthy flu-fighter thanks to its antioxidant quercetin, as well as an amino acid called L-theanine. Various studies have shown that quercetin acts as a potent antiviral agent, hindering viral replication of many respiratory viruses, including influenza virus. One study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found quercetin to inhibit the replication of a common cold virus in its initial stage of infection.

Hi Everybody, Dr. Mike here.
Well I survived the surgery to replace my arthritic left hip. Thank you all for the prayers and cards. The first two weeks were miserable, but thankfully things began to get better. I am now five weeks post surgery and I feel great. Still need to get stronger and improve my endurance, but slowly getting my mojo back.
Having gone through this surgery process I would recommend to anyone that the rehabilitation process is extremely important. Follow your doctor's orders and do the exercises. But take it slow and easy.
I am back in the office seeing patients
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from
9:00-11:00 am & 2:00-5:00 pm.
Please call if you or someone you love needs help.
Because nobody has time for pain!

Hello friends Dr. Norris here.
Well I have a new hip, now I'm getting acquainted with how to walk again.
Still needing a walker to get around, but each day I seem to be getting stronger.
The hardest thing is sleeping on my back all night...misery.
Cindy and Amanda have been such a blessing and I really appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.
It looks like I should be able to return to work light duty in the middle of October.
Until then be well.
Sincerely,
Michael Norris, DC
Hi Everybody Dr. Norris here.
Many of you know I have been suffering with severe arthritis in my left hip. It is the result of an old injury from playing football in high school. I have used therapy, massage and chiropractic care which has helped to manage my symptoms for 50 years.
After consulting with several orthopedic surgeons I have decided to undergo a total hip replacement on September 18th. The recovery period is approximately four weeks. Because of this I will be out of the office from Monday 9/18 thru Friday 10/13.
If you have a chiropractic issue that needs attention during this period I am referring patients to Dr. Craig Gelfound. He is a great doctor with the same techniques I use, so you will be in good hands. His office is just down the street from mine at:
1629 West Avenue J, suite 101.
The phone is (661) 942-3346.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I'm a terrible patient so keep praying for my wife as it will be a long four weeks with me at home.
I promise to do the rehabilitative program to get back as soon as possible.
âBecause nobody has time for pain! Even old doctors.â
Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Norris

"What's the difference between a 3-week-old puppy and a sportswriter? In six weeks, the puppy stops whining."
-Mike Ditka, NFL player and coach.
America's Team
Early in the 1993 season, Emmitt Smith, the all-pro running back for the Dallas Cowboys, injured his back. The type of injury he had would usually keep a player out for 6-8 weeks. His teammate, Daryl Johnston, recommended a chiropractor who had helped with a prior injury. Smith began chiropractic treatments and was back in the lineup after two weeks. He went on to lead the Cowboys to a win in the Superbowl and was named the league MVP. Soon players were flocking to their chiropractors. Today almost every professional team in the four major sports has a team chiropractor. The Professional Golf Association, Professional Rodeo and Professional Beach Volleyball all offer Chiropractic services at their competitions. Olympic teams and individual athletes have chiropractors on staff to help them compete at a higher level.
ERADICATE EARACHES
This time of the year I treat a lot of people with earaches, especially children. Windy conditions, swimming and variable temperatures can all cause the ear canal to become inflamed. The medical treatment is antibiotics and surgically implanted tubes. There is a simple adjustment technique which opens the ear canal allowing for the body to drain and fight the infection. So at the first sign of ear irritation see your chiropractor for an evaluation.
HEALTH TIP: Move It, Move It, Move It!
It's no secret that exercise can produce powerful mood-boosting endorphins. But do you really need to break a sweat to reap those benefits? A new study in the Journal of Health Psychology says No; simply getting up and moving around seems to reduce feelings of depression, say researchers at the University of Connecticut.
Light physical activity was actually associated with the biggest emotional benefit in the study, compared to moderate and high-intensity exercise. What's nice about what they found is that it didn't take a lot of effort to make a difference. If people get off the couch and go for a little stroll, or go walk around a shopping center, they can potentially see a difference. It's not necessary to push yourself to uncomfortable levels of exercise.

HEALTH TIP: Allergy Treatment
With allergy season upon us try this easy remedy. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, told Time that when his own allergies get bad, he applies a cold washcloth to his face for a few minutes. âWhen the itching and irritation get really bad, it can really provide a quick moment of escape,â he said. I can confirm that this method works and even when you donât have allergies, doing this is super relaxing, so you should try it anyway.

Hi Everybody Dr. Norris here.
Arthritis is a common ailment that affects many of us as we age. In simple terms arthritis is a disease which causes inflammation and degeneration of the normal joint surface. It most often occurs in weight bearing joints such as the hips, knees and ankles, but is also found in the hands, spine and pelvis. There are many causes and kinds of arthritis with the most common type being osteoarthritis also known as degenerative arthritis. It usually starts by trauma and overuse, which leads to the destruction of the joint cartilage. This roughened surface thins out and begins to cause pain and dysfunction. For the most part arthritis can't be fixed. But it can be managed. It is similar to diabetes in that there are strategies which can slow down and provide relief of symptoms.
The best recommendations to help manage arthritis are Lifestyle, Exercise, Treatment, and Nutrition.

HEALTH ALERT: Fight Mental Decline with Activity.
Even in your 70s and beyond, simple activities including web-surfing, playing games, and socializing may help stave off mental decline. That's the conclusion of a recent study. Those activities appeared to help prevent mild cognitive impairment. That condition involves problems with memory, thinking and attention that don't interfere much with daily life but which increase risks for developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

Hi everybody, Dr. Mike here.
It's the time of year when we Americans stop and think about what we are thankful for. It may be our family, our friends or our financial status. These are all good things to be grateful for. I've had some health challenges this summer requiring intervention and recuperation... so understandably, I'm very thankful for the doctors, nurses and caregivers who helped me in a time of need. I'm also thankful for my friends and patients who were concerned and prayed for me. Finally I'm extremely thankful for Cindy, my wife, and Amanda, my daughter, who have been with me every step of the way. It has been said that our health is one of the most important things we have. Often we take it for granted until it is threatened. Don't do that... rejoice every day you have and be thankful for them.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I just celebrated my 62nd birthday. You would think in all my years I would have figured out most things by now... wrong.

HEALTH ALERTS: Avoid Opiates At All Costs
Music fans worldwide were still mourning the death of iconic rock star Prince at age 57, when the tragedy was compounded by news that it was due to an opioid overdose. Medical Examiners announced that an autopsy had determined that Prince's death was an accident caused by fentanyl toxicity, a prescription opioid drug used to treat severe pain, carries a high risk for addiction and dependence; Prince was reportedly taking it for hip pain.
The U.S. is in the midst of an epidemic of opioid overdoses. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and in 2014, 40 percent of the 47,055 fatal drug overdoses that occurred were related to prescription pain relievers. In fact, 78 people in the U.S. die every day from an opioid overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
I honestly feel blessed to have such a group of patients that make intelligent decisions about their health. You also understand healing and fixing the real cause of your problem can take time. You've been a loyal chiropractic patient and are reaping the benefits, now and later in life. You finish what you start and your spine, muscles and nervous system will be healthier and younger because of it. You've made my practice a wonderful place to be and I want you to always feel I am your Chiropractor. Even if we don't see each other for a while, I want you to always know your welcome and I'll be happy to see you. I'll always be here to help you. Have a wonderful weekend!

HEALTH TIP:
Not All Fats Are Created Equal
There are good fats, like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, which can help reduce bad cholesterol levels, and reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. These include: avocados, olives, nuts and seeds. And then, there are bad fats, like saturated and trans fat, which can put you at greater risk for heart disease. These include: fatty meats, fast food and margarine. So eat the good fat, not the bad.
HEALTH TIP: Magic Berry
Blueberries have more antioxidantsâthose magical molecules that can help prevent a host of maladiesâthan 40 other common fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant plant pigments that make blueberries blue, guard against heart disease, cancer, and age-related blindness and memory loss. Theyâre also tops when it comes to preventing urinary tract infections, thanks to the antioxidant epicatechins, which keep bacteria from sticking to bladder walls.
