🌱 Don’t Forget to Check Your Garlic!
A few signs, tips, and photos to help guide you:
🧄 Preparing to Harvest:
Cut your garlic scapes (flower buds) after their first full curl.
➤ They’re edible and delicious — like a mix between garlic and asparagus!
➤ See the photo below to compare garlic with and without a scape cut.
Leave one scape per variety as a signal marker.
Stop watering about two weeks before harvesting.
Mark your calendar for the week after the 4th of July — this is the perfect time to watch the weather and inspect your garlic daily.
Not sure? Gently pull one up. A ready bulb will feel firm and plump, with its wrappers fully intact. If it’s a little early, it’s still edible — it just might’ve grown a bit more with time.
🧄 When to Harvest:
Look for 3–4 brown, dried leaves at the base of the stalk.
You should still see 4–6 green leaves at the top.
If possible, wait 2 days after a rainfall.
If you left a scape, it will be standing straight up but not yet opened.
🧄 After Harvesting:
Pull gently from the soil, tapping the stalk against a bucket to remove loose dirt.
Dry whole bulbs in a dark, dry, well-ventilated place — avoid direct sunlight.
Cure for 2–3 weeks.
To clean:
➤ Peel one dry leaf layer down the stem to reveal a clean bulb.
➤ Trim roots as close as possible.
➤ Cut stems to 1–2 inches above the bulb for storage.
We save the biggest bulbs for replanting after Halloween, and enjoy the smallest ones now!
