Grow w/ Us!
ACRES (Agricultural Community Resources for Everyday Sustainability) Student Farm is the University of Wyoming’s 1.8 acre vegetable farm. Students brought ACRES into being, and they continue to run it today with the help of the UW and Laramie communities. ACRES grows its produce using sustainable methods and strives to support and promote local agriculture. The student farm additionally provides educational, research, and volunteer opportunities. We set aside free garden space for students to use during the summer, and collaborate with organizations working to promote local food production and improve access to nutrition in our area. Members and volunteers have the opportunity to learn about organic and sustainable food production, food and farm waste composting, and how to enjoy yourself outside in Laramie. Please join us for our weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 5PM in AG 4041. Also, please check our website which is always being updated with events and group workdays open to everyone. Weekly compost collection from the UW campus and Laramie businesses, and composting on-site at the student farm's 1.8-acre allotment. We also pick up from two community sites - one in the Ag Experiment Station parking lot on 30th and Harney, and the other in the alley behind the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, near 8th and Fremont. Right now, we are able to accept fruit and vegetables, coffee grounds, and egg shells, but not meat, dairy, bread, or utensils.
2. Growing food on the student farm allottment! This is the core activity of our organization and keeps us busy during the spring, summer and early fall. We hope to eventually grow vegetables in our hoop houses during the winter, and split the produce between sales and donations.
3. We spend much of our time after the summer season getting ready to do it all over again - taking care of the soil, fundraising to pay summer interns, and hosting events to build community around local agriculture, As members of UW's Sustainability Coalition, we work toward a three-tiered approach to sustainability, one that includes social, economic, and ecological activities. We help with zero-waste events on campus by accepting compost.
