Back Stress Fractures are definitely on the rise. We hearing this happening to young athletes more and more nowadays. Young athletes need to learn how to run, jump, hop, leap, land, kick and throw at an early age. 12 years old is too late. The volume that comes with playing sports year round, combined with no strength training, or even worse, bad strength training is a recipe for trouble.

The stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) is a key element of strength and conditioning, and yet we still have a very poor understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the enhancement of force in the concentric phase, after the preceding eccentric phase.

Currently, it is thought that a number of mechanisms might contribute to SSC force enhancement, although their relative importance might change depending on the type of movement. These factors include:

1️⃣ residual force enhancement
2️⃣ elastic energy storage
3️⃣ an increased active state (pre-tension or pre-activation)
4️⃣ a change in the points on the force-velocity or length-tension relationships at which the muscle produces force.

This study assessed the role of pre-activation in the squat, by comparing a preceding eccentric phase with a preceding isometric phase, when both involved the same force production, and similar muscle activation.

Although both isometric and eccentric phases caused force enhancement, the eccentric phase produced a greater effect. This indicates that an increase in active state is a key mechanism underlying SSC function in the squat, but that other factors must also contribute.

Strength and Conditioning Research

Yesterday, I published an infographic of a study showing that introducing greater compliance into a tendon in a laboratory setting caused ⬇️ maximum strength, and ⬇️ rate of force development (RFD).

This happens because more compliant tendons allow muscles to shorten more quickly during a concentric joint action. And when muscles contract faster, they produce less force (per the force-velocity relationship).

This important study showed that strength training with heavy loads was more effective at ⬆️ tendon stiffness than strength training with light loads.

Greater ⬆️ in tendon stiffness could therefore be one mechanism by which heavy load strength training produces greater ⬆️ in maximum strength.
