You may think menopause sucks, and that you have to accept it. I get it, but you’re wrong. I’m excited to tell you why.
The role of fitness in menopause is my expertise. My goal is to share what I have learned through years of education/experience

Turns out discipline wasn’t the secret.
Consistency was. Listening was. Choosing habits I can actually live with was.
The unsexy stuff? It works. And I’m officially done pretending otherwise.
Tell me… what “boring” habit are you opting into this year?

Strength isn’t something you can spot across a room.
It’s about what you can do and how you feel doing it.
What does strong look or feel like for you right now?

September is Su***de Prevention Month, and this one hits close to home.
Did you know that the su***de rate among women veterans jumped 24.1% between 2020 and 2021? That’s nearly four times higher than the increase among male veterans and vastly higher than among non-veteran women.
Women veterans in general have higher rates of PTSD, su***de, and complex health histories compared to their civilian counterparts. Add menopause on top of that and you get what I’ve called before “the perfect storm.”
The impact of menopause on mental health and su***de risk among women veterans is still understudied and not well defined—yet we know the risks are real, and the silence around them is dangerous.
I’m proud to be one of the who shared their story for DAV’s Women Veterans: The Journey to Mental Wellness. This report sheds light on the unique factors contributing to the staggering rates of su***de among women veterans and how the system charged with our mental health care must do better.
➡️ Link to the report is in my bio.
➡️ Please read, share, and support organizations like that are fighting to make a difference.

Midlife truth: you can be soft and strong, in pain and powerful, grieving and proud.
Both. Can. Be. True.
These are mine — what’s yours?

Thank you for inviting me to be part of this year’s National Convention. It was truly inspiring to see so many fellow veterans share their passions and come together to support each other. Also, thank you for helping me amplify the message about getting access to in the VA healthcare system. A lot more work needs to be done but I’m proud to be in this fight together.

Body positivity sounds empowering, right? But here’s the truth I see over and over again, especially in midlife.
Trying to always feel good about how you look can feel like yet another job. Another thing you’re “failing” at. Another way to stay stuck in body obsession… just in a prettier package.
And that’s not freedom. That’s just pressure dressed up in glitter. ✨
That’s why I talk about body neutrality instead.
It’s not about loving every inch.
It’s about not letting your body image run the show.
It’s about moving, eating, and living in a way that feels good without tying your worth to your reflection.
Because peace with your body is a whole lot more powerful than constantly trying to love it.
💬 I’d love to hear from you:
Have you ever felt like body positivity made you feel worse?

We don’t give our bodies nearly enough credit.
Our bodies have stretched, shifted, carried, healed, and grown actual life.
But somehow, we still nitpick them in the mirror and act like they need to earn our approval.
So here is your reminder: Instead of asking “What’s wrong with my body?”, ask “What has my body carried me through?”
What’s one thing your body has done that you forget to celebrate?

Welcome! I’m happy you’re here. What began as a quest to help my friends experiencing menopause has evolved into a mission to enhance the quality of life for all women. I’m eager to share with you what I have learned through years of education and experience.
My name is Dr. Maria Luque. I’m a fitness expert, health science professor, menopause researcher, and busy mother with a passion for sharing knowledge and helping women lead healthier happier lives.
Here’s why I’m here: To help women in menopause and peri-menopause maximize their quality of life. Helping women navigate the challenges and rewards of menopause is my particular passion. If this is you, I’ve got your back. I’m in my late forties myself–so I’m right there with you, wielding my education and experience to bring you the uncompromising advice you need to get through this sometimes bewildering transition.
You may think menopause sucks, and that you have to accept it. I get it, but you’re wrong, and I’m excited to tell you why.
You may think hormone replacement therapy is your only option. And yet you have so many questions and concerns about it. I get it. HRT is an option, but it’s not your only option. I’ll help you untangle the research and learn how it applies to you. And as for alternatives to HRT, well, we have a lot to cover!
What about those self-styled experts promising a “cure” for menopause? I get it, but just say no. If you’re as busy as I am, you have better things to do with your time than wade through a sea of confusing, even alarming, remedies. Menopause is not an illness or a disability, any more than being female is. There might even be reasons to celebrate this phase of our lives. Sure, there are parts we could do without–hot flashes, anyone?–but I have lots of good news on that front, too.
