Pretend play allows your child to learn about themselves and the world. Use this storytelling activity to help your child develop communication and cognitive skills.

Activity: Once Upon a Time (3 - 5 years)

Use: On The Go

Description: On a long ride, make up funny stories with your child. You start it off with something like, "Once upon a time there was a teeny, tiny wiggly ant..." Then let them tell you what happens next. Take turns adding to the story and see how far their imagination can go.

Brainy Background: As you go back and forth inventing a story, the interesting, new, and fun words you use invite your child to add to their growing vocabulary. This is an important part of communicating with others.

Actividad: Había una vez (3 - 5 años)

Uso: Muy activo

It can be hard to tell if a preschool-age child is likely to have a learning disability. When kids are young, they develop skills at different speeds, and kids have different strengths and weaknesses. As they get older their abilities usually even out.

But there are some signs in preschool and early school that a child may be diagnosed with a learning disorder later on. If you notice any of these early signs, contact your pediatrician for an official evaluation.

Between 6-12 months, one by one, introduce the top 9 food allergens, foods that have the highest rates of food allergies, including dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and sesame. Research shows that early exposure, and continued regular exposure, helps to reduce the risk of developing severe food allergies.

See this post for tips to use when introducing your baby to top food allergens. Always contact to your pediatrician if you have concerns about introducing these foods or if you have a family history of food allergies.

The first year of your baby's life will be filled with so many new sensations. Try this texture activity with your baby to help them better understand the world around them.

Activity: Tummy Textures (0-9 months)

Use: Laundry

Description: Laundry day can be a great time for brain-building! Give your child some tummy time on different fabrics, like a sweater or a fluffy towel. Describe the textures to them like, "Do you feel the scratchy sweater?" Watch how they react to the way it feels and talk with them about it. Children learn through their senses.

Brainy Background: Touching different textures is a great way for your child to explore the world. And talking together helps them understand more of the world around us. It also connects sensations, words, and what they mean.

Actividad: Texturas boca abajo (0-9 meses)

Uso: Lavadero

Mealtime is a great time to help your child learn and grow. Try this making connections activity with your child next time you are spending time together.

Activity: Mealtime Math (2 years - 5 years)

Use: Mealtime

Description: Are you eating crackers or other food like that? Ask your child how many they want. Give them that amount and say, "Eat one. How many are left?" Count together, encouraging them to count out loud. Then you take a turn. Continue this game until the crackers are all gone.

Brainy Background: In "Mealtime Math," your child is thinking in symbols—that the numeral 3 represents three of something. This game helps them begin to understand how to add and subtract in everyday life. Games like this help build a strong foundation for learning math later on.

Pregúntale a tu niño cuántas quiere. Dale esa cantidad a tu niño y dile, "Come una.
