What You Need to Know About ICP (Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy)

Itching during pregnancy can seem like a normal symptom — but if it becomes intense, especially on your hands or feet, it could be something more serious.

ICP is a liver condition that affects the flow of bile in the body during pregnancy. It can show up with little warning and often without a rash. The main symptom is persistent, sometimes unbearable itching, often worse at night.

While it is rare, ICP is important to recognize because it can increase the risk of:
• Preterm labor
• Fetal distress
• Meconium in the amniotic fluid
• Stillbirth

With early diagnosis and monitoring, outcomes can be greatly improved. Bloodwork and careful collaboration with your provider make a big difference👍

This beautiful family welcomed their baby earthside in the peace and safety of their own home, surrounded by love, strength, and gentle hands. From the tender support in labor, to those first precious breaths, to the joy-filled postpartum checks — this is what supported birth can look like.
