David Brownstein, Psy.D. Clinical Psychologist Eliminating the stigma of mental health problems in the Orthodox Jewish community. The first and most important strategy to reduce stigma is education.

The fear of stigma and misinformation about mental health matters often prevent people in need of psychological treatment from accessing it. Although effective help and treatment may be available, stigma can result in people not accessing it when they need it most. My goal is to disseminate accurate and reliable information about a wide range of mental health topics and questions. I seek to empower you to actively participate in enhancing your mental health and that of those whose lives you touch.

Such important information for the community!
- Know how to identify a qualified therapist.
- Only work with licensed (or those being supervised by licensed) professionals.
- Better to find a therapist who's a good fit for you than one who does XYZABC therapy.
- Better to find a therapist who's a good fit for you than "the top specialist" for a particular disorder.
- It's OK to prefer a therapist who understands and/or appreciate your values.

There is probably no subset of Orthodox Jews for whom the taboo of acknowledging psychological distress is greater than for Orthodox Jewish father's. It's time to stop the stigma.

Treating Orthodox Jewish men in psychotherapy requires appreciating their particular vulnerabilities. As an Orthodox Jewish father myself, I am aware of and sensitive to those concerns.

Spotlight on the Expert - Episode #3: Parenting Children Who Are No Longer Observant. In this interview, Rabbi Dr. Yehuda Krohn, a clinical psychologist in the Chicago area, talks about the parenting challenges of religiously observant parents whose adolescent or adult children have chosen a non-observant lifestyle. Dr. Krohn elaborates on some of the common reactions religious parents have when their children behave in ways that do not align with the parents' values, and he offers some insight into the source of those reactions. Finally, Dr. Krohn offers practical suggestions about how parents and community members can be more accepting of their children's choices even when the parents disagree with those choices.
