Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, first entered the medical lexicon in 1789 when English physician Michael Underwood described cases of "debility of the legs" in children. As the 20th century approached, polio's grip on societies tightened, manifesting in severe epidemics across Europe and the United States, affecting not just children but adults as well. In the 1940s and 1950s, devastating bulbar polio cases saw patients confined to "iron lungs," cumbersome machines that mimicked the natural process of breathing. Thankfully, the advent of effective vaccines in the 1950s led to the near-elimination of polio in the U.S., as reported by the CDC, which noted a staggering 21,000 cases annually before the vaccine's introduction. Although polio remains endemic in some regions, a global commitment to vaccinating children could pave the way for a polio-free world. As travel increases, consulting a Travel Medicine Specialist is crucial for protection against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
