Exercise can help autistic people in many ways. It can improve sleep and reduce behaviors. When children do activities they enjoy, like swimming, basketball, or after-school sports, it helps them build a routine. These activities also give a chance to practice social skills and make friends.

Finding good times to practice coping skills can be tricky. Doing too much practice at once might make some children feel upset or frustrated. Working with people in the child's daily life, like family or teachers, can help find what helps best for them and what doesn’t.
Practicing these skills at home, not just during therapy, makes it easier for children to use them when they feel upset or overwhelmed.

Below is a list of coping skills along with their benefits. Keep in mind that these strategies may not be effective for everyone, as each individual is unique. Based on my experience working with past clients, I’ve observed which coping skills were helpful and which were less so. Encourage your child to explore various coping techniques. It's most effective to practice these skills when your child is calm, increasing the likelihood they will use them when needed in the future.
