LIU Student Society of Health System Pharmacy Student Society of Health System Pharmacy at Long Island University. Officially recognized by ASHP.

We’re the Long Island University Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) and as such our mission is to serve our fellow pharmacy students by informing them about pharmacy practice opportunities in health care settings such as hospitals and long- term care facilities. Furthermore we strive to guide interested students to pursue further educational training and experience essential to their future careers. Generally, we focus our fall semester on educating pharmacy students about clinical pharmacy practice and about pharmacy residency programs - both general and specialized. We help students prepare to apply to residency programs by holding informative lectures, such as “Why consider doing a pharmacy practice residency?” and “How to prepare for ASHP’s Midyear Meeting”, because many residency program interviews take place at the Midyear Meeting in December. We participate in community events all year round such as the health fairs in Metrotech Plaza, Fort Green Park, Fort Hamilton, and the promotion of pharmacy awareness month on Good Morning America every October. In the spring we hold off campus events such as our annual Poison Prevention Lesson, in honor of Poison Prevention Month in March, and our Medicines in My Home Project for high school kids. These activities help the participating pharmacy students practice essential skills in counseling, presentation, and public speaking under the supervision of a clinical pharmacist. Furthermore we encourage students to go to Albany for Pharmacy Lobby Day and to get involved with NYSCHP (New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists) so that when we become pharmacists we can participate in collaborative drug therapy management and fully utilize our clinical knowledge in practice. In summary, we feel it is our duty to inform pharmacy students about career paths they may not have known about before entering pharmacy school, inspire them to make the most of their valuable education by continuing further clinical training, and prepare interested students to pursue careers in health systems.

I know that many of you, if not all, are receiving letters and emails from ASHP asking you to renew your membership. If you submitted the voucher to us, your membership should have been renewed, so you may probably disregard the renewal reminders. However, to be sure, please log in to ashp.org under "My Account" and make sure that you see Student Member, expires 12/31/2013. This should be under ASHP Membership Info, NOT under My Subscription Info.
If you do not see your membership ending on 12/31/2013, please let us know so we can help you find the source of the problem.

Thank you to those who showed up to today's Dean's Hour. I think that it was very successful and many of us received new insights into preparing for residency applications, career prospects of clinical pharmacists, and where hospital pharmacy is headed in the future. Dr. Troy Kish kindly offered us to reach out to him via email for any further questions, so feel free to contact him at troy.kish@liu.edu.

In other news, after prolonged consideration, our board has finally decided to appoint two officers for our Public Relations committee. Please join me in congratulating Eric Ocheretyaner and Jasmine Tabibi for joining our team!

We had an exceptionally large number of qualified applicants this year and unfortunately were only able to offer two people the positions. However, we appreciate all of those who showed interest in the position. We would like to thank you for being such active members of SSHP, which much more important than any committee position!
