This week’s Pioneer is one of my own ancestors! In honor of thanksgiving i wanted to give thanks to Jacob Hatch for his faith and dedication that he showed throughout his life.

Jacob Hatch, born in 1786 in Massachusetts, lived a long and devoted life as an early Latter-day Saint pioneer. After marrying Elizabeth Wilde and raising a large family in New York, he served briefly in the War of 1812 and later embraced the restored gospel when he and Elizabeth were baptized in 1838. From that moment forward, Jacob cast his lot with the Saints, moving from New York to Iowa, then to Kirtland, Missouri, and Nauvoo, enduring persecution and personal tragedy—including the violent death of his wife Elizabeth. Despite these hardships, he continued west with the Church, first crossing the plains in 1849 at age 63 and later helping rescue stranded handcart companies, an effort that left him permanently crippled. In Utah he married Hannah Gailey, an English convert who had also sacrificed much for her faith, and together they helped colonize Payson, Utah. Remembered for his faith, resilience, and lifelong service, Jacob Hatch stands as a devoted pioneer who threw his strength, testimony, and family into building the early Church.

Our Norwegian Latter- Day Saint of the week is Erik Gautesson Midtboen Hogan. Erik was Born on 23 June 1801 in Rollag, Buskerud, Norway. He was married to Helga Knudsdatter in 1836. On 1843 Latter- Day Saint missionaries taught them the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Erik and family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, helping organize a local Scandinavian branch. When Erik was inspired to move to America his wife was not thrilled and didn’t want to make the journey. His response was “If it does me no good at all it’ll be better for my children”. His family immigrated to Nauvoo to Gather with the Saints until this family moved west and settled in South Bountiful (now Woods Cross, Utah).
