They don’t tell you that labor isn’t just pain it’s pressure, waves, intensity, and moments where your body takes over before your mind can catch up.

They don’t tell you that the way you move, breathe, and position your body can change everything.

They don’t tell you that you’re allowed to ask questions, take your time, and say “I need a minute.”

They don’t tell you that hospital routines are not the same as requirements.

And they definitely don’t tell you that having someone there who knows birth someone whose only job is you can make all the difference.

This is why education matters.
This is why support matters.
This is why doulas matter. 🤍🦋

January is also National Birth Defects Prevention Month
While not all birth defects can be prevented, early prenatal care, proper nutrition, managing health conditions, and education play a powerful role in supporting healthy pregnancies.

Support and information matter before conception and during pregnancy. This is why preparation is key.

What they don’t talk about enough is…Prenatal Depression!!!

Pregnancy isn’t always glowing skin and excitement.
Sometimes it’s heavy.
Sometimes it’s lonely.
Sometimes you feel sad, numb, anxious, or disconnected and you don’t know why.

And no… that doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful.
It doesn’t mean you don’t love your baby.
It means you’re human.

Prenatal depression is real, and it deserves the same care and attention as postpartum mental health.

If you’re struggling:
🤍 Speak up
🤍 Ask for support
🤍 You are not failing
🤍 You are not alone

Support during pregnancy matters just as much as support during birth.

If you need someone to listen, help you navigate resources, or just remind you that you’re doing the best you can I’m here. 🦋 Let Chat!!

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month Cervical health matters before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and beyond. Regular checkups, knowing your body, and advocating for yourself can make a huge difference in reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes.

As a doula, I always encourage my mamas to ask questions, stay informed, and never ignore what their body is telling them.

Postpartum depression is real, and it’s more common than people realize. It’s not a weakness. It’s not something you can just “snap out of.” Hormonal shifts, lack of sleep, stress, birth trauma, complications, and major life changes can all play a role.

Some signs to look out for include feeling constantly overwhelmed, excessive crying, trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps, feeling disconnected from your baby, brain fog, mood swings, changes in appetite, or feeling like you’re failing even when you’re doing your best.

You are not broken. You are not alone. And help is available. Support can make a huge difference, whether that looks like talking to your provider, reaching out to a mental health professional, leaning on trusted support, or having postpartum care in place.

If this post resonates with you or someone you love, please know there is help and you don’t have to carry this by yourself. Checking in, speaking up, and asking for support can save lives.

2025 I had the honor of supporting so many incredible mamas. I also celebrated my 5th year as a doula hosted my 4th annual community baby shower and held my very first postpartum moms event and I plan to keep that going. I did all of this while being a mom of 7 juggling kids in sports working full time and still showing up for my community. And honestly I am really proud of myself. To every mama who trusted me supported me and allowed me into such a sacred space in your life thank you truly. These families are not just clients to me anymore. I have gained 22 nieces and nephews including three sets of twins with two precious babies now angels 🤍🕊️ Each one holds a special place in my heart. Yall are my extended family now and that bond is something I will never take lightly or trade for anything. Thank you for trusting me with your journeys your stories your babies and your hearts. Thank you for the love the growth the partnerships the successful events and everything we are building together.

Here is to strong mamas so many little lives and a purpose that keeps unfolding 🤍🦋 Wait how I show up and show out in 2026 😜

One week ago today, I had the honor of supporting a strong beautiful mama as she welcomed her baby girl into the world. From pregnancy to birth, she showed so much care, intention and love always eager to learn and prepare for motherhood and that speaks volumes about the kind of mother she already is, and although dad couldn’t be there physically he was absolutely present in spirit watching over them and covering them with love. Baby girl entered this world safe protected and already so deeply loved. It was truly an honor to support this mama during such a sacred moment. I am so proud of her. She is an amazing mother and Baby A is blessed beyond measure.

Welcome earthside BabyGirl!!!

The American College of Nurse-Midwives mourns the devastating death of Dr. Janell Green Smith, CNM, who died from complications of childbirth. Dr. Smith was a respected midwife, scholar, and advocate whose life and work reflected a deep commitment to respectful, evidence-based, and equitable care.

That a Black midwife and maternal health expert died after giving birth in the United States is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Her death underscores the persistent and well-documented reality that Black women—regardless of education, income, or professional expertise—face disproportionate risks during pregnancy and childbirth due to systemic racism and failures in care.

We grieve Dr. Smith’s loss and recognize it as a profound failure of the systems meant to protect birthing people. In her honor, ACNM commits not only to reaffirming our values, but to intensifying our actions to dismantle racial inequities in maternal health, strengthen accountability in care systems, and work alongside Black midwives, clinicians, and communities to prevent future tragedies.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Smith’s family, loved ones, and the midwifery community. We carry her legacy forward with urgency, humility, and resolve.
