Being able to directly hand out over 80 $50 gift cards to struggling families and individuals has been…I don’t even have words for it. 1 family decided to step up and say hey we want to give to people through mutual aid, no strings attached. Dropped me the cards, told me to message when I needed more.
Community members (some who hadn’t even heard of the Closet yet) when my truck was down for a couple days, popped up to personally deliver cards to strangers they’d never met either.
Other community leaders and business owners picked up cards from me so we could spread the security to as many as possible. They even purchased more and encouraged others after to keep it going.

I’ve been watching posts in various groups, responding to direct requests and coordinating volunteers to best of my ability and connection. This is the magic yall. This is you. This is community. This is all of us.

In mutual aid every single dollar makes a difference. No amount is too small. $1 dollar from 100 neighbors is still $100. Thats a small car repair to make sure someones parent can get to work, that amount covered the rest of a single mothers rent so she could get more formula and food, and that amount can be the difference of a utility bill being cut off. So a family of 5 doesn’t have to walk with gallon jugs of water for days back and forth, till something can be figured out.

If you’d like to help continue covering
community through mutual aid there are so many ways.

-Sharing the mutual aid requests so more eyes can see them. These include the financial and physical item requests.

-Purchasing/sending funds for store gift cards.

-Making meals to give to neighbors or giving neighbors rides to food pantries.

-Dropping gift cards off to be distributed.

-and this easiest of all just interact with this page. Share, like and comment. Send stars and gifts that will help the page stay monetized.

I love y’all. This is a wild time. We can make it through together though. This you show and prove over and over and over again.

🤎 In a better world, we show this level of care and kindness to one another—and in return, our children grow up in whole, safe, and healthier communities.

Normalize co parenting with your friends.

The “I’m running late, can you grab my kid too?” texts.
The unplanned playdates that turn into dinner.
The messy houses nobody apologizes for.
The extra chicken nuggets tossed on a plate because their kid was hungry too.

This is real community.
This is what “it takes a village” actually means.

No judgment.
No keeping score.
Just moms showing up for each other,
and raising our kids like one big, beautifully chaotic family.

Today, we want to give a special shoutout to Yahaira — bilingual doula and lactation counselor in training, who has been with our collective since 2022. Yahaira is a fierce maternal health advocate and a dedicated supporter of birthing families. As we close out Semana de la Lactancia Latina and kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re especially proud to uplift Yahaira’s work and the deep impact she makes in our community.

Thank you, Yahaira, for the love, leadership, and vision you bring to this work every single day! Your presence is a gift — not only to the families you serve but to all of us who have the honor of working alongside you.

Still can’t believe the energy at the UBBLS Conference ✨ and now, as we wrap up Black Breastfeeding Week, one message still rings loud: “Collaboration over competition.” 🌹❤️🤎

Because when it comes to Black lactation, it’s never been about shining alone, it’s about building, uplifting, and thriving together for our mamas, our babies, and our community.

We’re excited to shine a spotlight on another one of our incredible team members in honor of the end of Black Breastfeeding Week!

Alexis joined Doulas of Douglas County in February as a trained doula. With support from our One Big Idea project, she expanded her expertise by becoming a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist. Alexis has also proudly breastfed both of her children for a combination of five years, bringing a wealth of professional and personal insight to our collective.

You are likely to catch Alexis out in the community, tabling at events, sharing resources, and connecting with families. Thank you Alexis for all that you do and your committment to this community!

Meet Emily – Certified Lactation Specialist, passionate breastfeeding advocate, and proud mom of four! With 13 years of combined firsthand breastfeeding experience, Emi brings a deep well of knowledge and a true commitment to helping mothers in our community set — and reach — their breastfeeding goals.

We’re thrilled to welcome her to Doulas of Douglas County as part of our “One Big Idea” project — made possible with support from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition.

As we wrap up Black Breastfeeding Support Week, we honor and celebrate Emily — not just today, but always. Thank you for your service to breastfeeding families!
