Before this was a market tent full of bread, it started with grief, flour, and a kitchen counter.
Hi, I’m Genevieve. The human behind Against the Grain Bread.
Against the Grain started in 2018 during a really difficult season of my life. I had just lost a baby and was navigating a new pregnancy, and baking became something that helped me cope and keep my hands busy.
Then the pandemic hit. Grocery store shelves were empty, people couldn’t find bread, and the little sourdough hobby I had been quietly working on suddenly turned into neighbors asking if I had extra loaves.
That small thing slowly grew into farmers markets, driveway stands, and a community of people who really love good bread.
Most weeks you’ll now find me under a market tent somewhere around the Bay Area surrounded by sourdough loaves, answering bread questions, and probably running on way too little sleep after a very early bake.
When I’m not baking, I’m a mom of three, a cook, a DIYer, a chicken keeper, a garden tinkerer, and an all around goofball. But if I’m being honest, I’m probably thinking about bread about 93% of the time.
The best part of all of this has honestly been the
people. Seeing familiar faces come back week after week and hearing what you made with the bread is my favorite part of market days.
Thanks for supporting a small local baker and letting me do something I love.
If you’ve had my bread before, tell me your favorite loaf in the comments. I love hearing what people are making with it.
