Nausea & Vomiting
Up to half of expecting mothers experience nausea and occasional vomiting in the first trimester; some women have nausea and vomiting throughout pregnancy. A primary cause is thought to be due to liver fatigue from the increased demands of pregnancy hormones. Oils that support or promote healthy digestion and liver function may decrease the experience of nausea in pregnancy. Supplements like vitamin B6, Magnesium, and Fermented Cod Liver Oil may also reduce occasional nausea; stress and sleep deprivation, movement due to travel, and spicy or fatty foods may increase nausea. Frequently eating smaller meals that are dense in protein and complex carbohydrates may bring relief. Loss of excessive fluids and weight in pregnancy is known as hyperemesis gravidarum, and may require medical care/and or hospitalization.

“Today we honor doulas! The steady hands, calm voices, and fierce advocates who stand beside families during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.

For Black women, doulas are more than support people. They are protectors. They are witnesses. They are bridges in a system where too many of us have experienced dismissal, bias, or preventable harm.

Black women are still disproportionately impacted by maternal mortality and morbidity. In times like these, culturally responsive, community-rooted birth support is essential.

Doulas:
• Improve birth outcomes
• Help reduce unnecessary interventions
• Provide emotional and physical support
• Advocate for informed consent and patient autonomy

When a Black woman says, “I want my doula there,” that request should be respected.

On National Doula Day, we celebrate the birth workers who are helping change outcomes in real time and we recommit to building systems where support, dignity, and safety are the standard, not the exception.

Tag a Doula and let them know: we see you. We honor you. We thank you.

Yes!
“This is another myth I hear time and time again: “It is unsafe to VBAC beyond 40 weeks.”

Here’s the truth: Going beyond 40 weeks gestation is not a contraindication to labor after cesarean.

While some studies have found lower VBAC odds after 40 weeks, I question the role of provider pressure and birthing parent stress on labor, spontaneous or otherwise.

What about the VBAC odds among those who feel supported during the last weeks of their pregnancy rather than facing the deadline of a repeat cesarean on the books?

As ACOG says, “Gestational age greater than 40 weeks along should not preclude [planned VBAC.]” *

There are no hard stops in terms of gestational age due to prior cesarean.

Want to learn more about VBAC and the evidence on uterine rupture risk by gestational age? Go to vbacfacts.com/courses

* I replaced “TOLAC” for “planned VBAC” in ACOG’s quote.
