Dr. Megan Mayer feels right at home at Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, having grown up in Lee’s Summit. An athlete herself, she tore her ACL in high school playing basketball and was a patient here at Rockhill. Dr. Gerald Dugan, an orthopedic surgeon, repaired her ACL, and that experience inspired her to become an orthopedic specialist like him so she could help others.

“Athletics has always been important to me, and it really helps me relate to my patients and give them the confidence that I will do my best to return them to their active lifestyle,” said Dr. Mayer.

Dr. Mayer is a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a focus in sports medicine and expertise in hip and knee arthroscopic procedures. She uses the latest treatment techniques to relieve pain, restore mobility, and help patients return to their active lifestyles. The challenge of solving complex problems excites her.

“My experiences allow me to understand their feelings and guide them through their treatment process. Recovery takes time, and knowing what to expect goes a long way to promote success.”

Working in her hometown keeps Dr. Mayer close to her family and friends. Some patients even know her outside of medicine, which helps them connect even further.

Thanks for all you do for our patients and our community, Dr. Mayer!

Dr. Megan Mayer recently kicked off yoga at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts by speaking about how yoga can benefit people at every stage of life.

Yoga is more than just a workout—it promotes flexibility, stability, and mental wellness while helping build a strong core that supports balance and protects joints. Because it’s a low-impact activity, yoga can be an important tool in recovery from pain or injury, and even some of Dr. Mayer’s surgical patients use it as part of their healing process. For those with conditions like arthritis, yoga offers a way to stay active without the strain of high-impact exercise.

No matter your age or ability, the goal is simple: keep moving to support both your body and your mind for lifelong health.

Jaylen will play his first football game as a college athlete at MoWest tomorrow. Two years ago, he broke his collarbone during practice on his high school team, and playing in college seemed like it may never happen. He feared for the future of his football career—until he got a second opinion from Dr. Larry Frevert at Saint Luke's Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists.

From ABCs to MDs, Dr. Wes Frevert has come a long way since his first day of first grade at Westview Elementary. Even as a child growing up in Lee's Summit, he always knew he wanted to be a doctor like his dad, Dr. Larry Frevert. And now, they're both orthopedic surgeons at Rockhill.

Before the white coat, Dr. Megan Mayer was a student at Prairie View Elementary in Lee's Summit, excited to go back to school at this time of year.

"My favorite back-to-school tradition was shopping for clothes and supplies. I had to get new folders for all my classes! I liked most subjects, but I really liked art."

Today, she’s a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, helping students and athletes get back to the activities they love. A proud graduate of Lee’s Summit High School, Dr. Mayer knows firsthand the importance of having trusted care close to home.

Help us wish all the local Lee's Summit R-7 School District students a happy first day of school and a healthy school year! 🍎

This year, we turned back-to-school shopping into a friendly competition. 💪

Our staff divided into 10 teams to gather school supplies to support Pleasant Hill R-3 School District, East Lynne 40 School District, and Strasburg PTO. The team that brought in the most supplies would get a free lunch—and all the bragging rights, of course.

Altogether, Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists collected over 1,400 items, including everything from backpacks and calculators to crayons and glue sticks. 📘 ✏️

We’re proud to give back to our community and help set local students up for success—and it never hurts to have a little fun along the way, too. 😉

Jaylen thought his future as a football player was over after suffering a serious injury in high school. Thanks to Dr. Larry Frevert at Rockhill, he is now starting his freshman year of college on a football scholarship!

The summer before his junior year, Jaylen worked hard on his strength and speed to prepare for football season. Then, he was tackled during practice and broke his collarbone.

“It was the most physical pain I’ve ever felt,” said Jaylen. “And then there was the crushing feeling that I would never play football again."

After an initial evaluation at the nearest hospital, Jaylen saw a local orthopedic doctor in Lawrence whose plan was to wait for the injury to heal naturally. Jaylen and his parents wanted a second opinion, and Rockhill was the overwhelming recommendation from friends.

They made the 70-mile drive to Lee’s Summit to see Dr. Larry Frevert, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. He confirmed the injury could heal on its own, but it would take a long time and might leave lasting mobility issues. Instead, he offered a surgical solution that provided faster relief and fewer complications.

“Dr. Frevert wanted to see me make a full recovery,” Jaylen said. “He didn’t want me to go back to playing sports with a lifetime of pain or a potential injury. That gave me a lot of peace of mind.”

Dr. Frevert surgically repaired Jaylen’s collarbone. Eight weeks of physical therapy later, Jaylen was back on the field. He is now preparing for his first season at MoWest.

Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists was proud to be the presenting sponsor for this year’s Art for Arthritis in Kansas City, an inspiring event where young artists living with juvenile arthritis team up with professional artists to create beautiful works for auction.

The creativity, resilience, and talent we saw were nothing short of inspiring. Each year, we’re honored to feature some of this incredible artwork in our office, bringing a piece of their story to our patients and visitors all year long.

Thank you to the Arthritis Foundation, the artists, and the community for making this event so impactful.

Dr. Jarron Tilghman is a man of many talents. He’s a musician, a baker, and an interventional physiatrist who offers non-surgical treatments for orthopedic conditions.

As a physician at Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Tilghman focuses on spine care using image-guided procedures. He emphasizes physical therapy, occupational therapy, injection therapies, and more. To him, each patient has a unique story to tell, and he enjoys getting to know the aspects of their lives that inspire them.

“I was trained to treat my patients like family as a general rule,” said Dr. Tilghman. “There are so many stories that they share in the context of a clinic visit that positively enhance the work environment not only for myself but also for my medical staff.”

When Dr. Tilghman evaluates a patient, he looks at their medical history and desired goals, and then does a comprehensive physical exam to identify limitations in their mobility and impact on their quality of life. Finally, he reviews diagnostic test results to identify the appropriate diagnosis and create a conservative treatment plan.

He doesn’t just treat pain—he restores purpose.

“There is no greater joy for me than to see a patient have such a positive outcome from a specific treatment plan. I recognize that it is a privilege to serve in this capacity and I do not take my responsibility lightly.”

When he takes off his lab coat at the end of the day, Dr. Tilghman wears lots of other hats. He is a husband, father of three children, singer, pianist, songwriter, baker, and youth sports coach. He also enjoys participating in medical mission trips and has served in countries like Honduras, Uganda, and Mexico.

Dr. Tilghman lives to serve others with grace, empathy, and a deep belief in the power of healing through human connection.

This Independence Day is the anniversary of Dr. Ryan Swope's retirement from the United States Air Force. Before coming to Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Swope was a doctor in the Air Force, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Treating a high volume of complex orthopedic injuries under pressure greatly increased his passion for the field. After finishing his service, he pursued a fellowship in hip and knee surgery and became certified in robotic-assisted surgery.

“I take a lot of pride in doing things accurately and consistently, and robotics allows me to deliver that level of precision in every case,” said Dr. Swope.

Total hip and knee replacement orthopedic surgery is the perfect career for Dr. Ryan Swope because it combines his love of science, math, and hands-on work. He offers advanced treatment options like robotic-assisted knee replacements at our Shoal Creek office, which allows him to create a highly personalized approach based on the patient’s unique anatomy. This precision supports better outcomes and a smoother recovery. He also sees patients in Blue Springs.

“There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping someone restore their independence and quality of life. It’s what keeps me motivated every day,” he said.

Outside of Rockhill, Dr. Swope enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two daughters. Whether snowboarding, mountain biking, or enjoying time on the lake, they’re always up for an adventure together.

Thank you, Dr. Swope, for your service to our country and for helping so many patients get back to the lives they love.
