This book is excellent in helping us to understand our understanding of trauma, particularly complex trauma. Interestingly I was reading it while waiting for my kiddos today when I overheard a father tell his 8-9 yo son that he had sh*t for brains bc he couldn’t figure out his belt buckle. 😞

Fantastic book for the mentally and perhaps physically overloaded wife/mom/worker...I caution you about reading this whilst in the midst of a pandemic as negative feelings may arise. I do highly recommend reading it WITH your spouse but don’t expect everyone to jump on board right away!

I just wanted to remind every adult who still gets to go to work, either in body or virtually, and who experiences some part of normalcy, remember that your children do not. The message from my kiddos and teens this week has been clear: I just want it to be normal and I just want to be back in school. We are asking them to isolate, they can’t get jobs, there is no structure to their days...and for how many days. Help provide structure. Older children can make their own schedule. Younger children will need help. Then make them adhere to it. In the long run, this will benefit all.

This is a fantastic parenting book. Gives you great language to use!

Hello all...please consider supporting this great organization, All Ages Read Together, that provides preschool to children who don’t meet the financials for Head Start and who cannot afford the preschools many of us sent our children to. This program basically helps get children kindergarten ready and exposes children to a classroom setting when they might otherwise have not had this exposure. Education is key!!!!

This is a fabulous book! A quick read and very well explained. It’s good even for tweens.

Stop the Entitlement Mentality in Your Kids.
I was conducting training at a major university this spring when a woman approached me. "I work with freshmen who won't complete their time cards on time. If I dock their pay, they don't care because their parents will just refill their debit card for them."

My wife just completed a master's paper on the increasing narcissism among today's students. "I deserve a good grade" is what too many professors are hearing. "Well, I worked hard on that project." Too bad. That's not how the real world works.

A lot of parents are afraid to say, "No" to their kids or let them fail because they fear the meltdown or aren't comfortable with their child "not liking" them in the moment. For the sake of your children and our society, we must stop this.

You don't have to follow through on this. Every entitled kid who grows up is one less competitor in the job market for my son! Even though many of his peers are "smarter" than him, he will outwork them and use his pig-headed persistence (what you may call obstinance) to surpass them.

The following is a short excerpt from the new 10 Secrets to Motivate Unmotivated Kids CDs. It is very powerful. This may apply to only a few people, but if the shoe fits, own up to it. A nice couple spoke to me after a workshop once. They told me the story of how their son in his late teens was floundering-he wouldn't take responsibility for himself, his grades, his job, his room, etc. They had done EVERYTHING to help him be successful.

So I asked them, "Do you know why your son isn't responsible and motivated? Because he doesn't have to be! You have been responsible for him every step of the way. You've rescued him, you've refused to let him suffer natural consequences. You thought you were doing him a favor, but you've created a monster. Your son doesn't have a problem-you do! And you probably weren't even doing this for HIM-you were doing it to assuage your own guilt as a parent. You didn't want to admit that your son was irresponsible. He embarrassed you so you jumped in and propped him up. You created a dependent, unmotivated child."

Go and apologize. "We need to apologize. By our actions over the first x years of your life, we have led you to believe that YOU don't have to be responsible for your choices because WE will be. That was wrong of us to do so we're sorry. From now on, you will own your choices and consequences, no matter how negative they are. Because we ultimately believe that you have a great future ahead of you. And we want YOU to take credit for that, not us."

Stop doing everything for your child. Allow him to fail. Allow him to experience emotional and financial pain. Don't bail him out just because it would be easier for everyone. Let him learn to be resourceful.

Be accountable to teachers for grades. Don't come to me. Talk it over with your teacher. She's the boss of the classroom. And I'm not going to be talking to your boss for you one day.

Begin this at a young age. Say no to them. Let them experience disappointment and develop the internal resources to overcome obstacles. Don't fix everything or go talk to their coaches or try to make everything right. Empty praise and trophies for participating create false expectations for our kids. No, you must work to earn things. It isn't satisfying if everything is given to you. No job? No money? No car keys. No car insurance.

Increasingly, school principals and parents are asking us to address the entitlement mentality that is seeping into this generation. If you want us to come to your school or church, reply to this email with the name of your school/church and city. We'll send you a proposal. It's a very powerful workshop (and one we are presenting this weekend in Ashburn and Vienna, VA). Click here to learn more.
